We will live up to the law and obey it in word arid spirit, but We don't pro pose knowingly and willingly to play nto tne hands or trie enemy. Sheldon left here tonight after a strenuous day of conference and plan ning with Judge Taft and Secretary Elmer Dover. Indiana V Battle around. The upshot of the conference this af ternoon, was the decision to make the first determined attack of the campaign on Indiana. It Is believed that tffday ndtana presents the most difficult reposition confronting the Republican managers. The concensus of oolnlon imoni bla- political chiefs who have conferred with Mr. Taft during the past week is that New York Is safe for the ReDUblicans. on the strength of the provisions of the Democratic platform, which are not ex pected to prove popular in the empire state, and upon the strength which Sherman, the G. O. P. vlce-presldentlal candidate, will bring to the ticket. Ohio Is believed to be safe by reason of Taft'a personal popularity, but In diana is a different proposition. The Republican causo Is believed to have Buffered by Governor Hanly's ten years in office. The labor vote in the Hoosier state appears pleased with the Democratic platform. In addition to this, John Wi Kern is counted on to pull many votes into the Bryan band wagon. Thttfie facts, coupled with prettT well- grounded rumors of dissatisfaction and disorganization within the ranks of tho Kepubllcan machine In Indiana, resulted In the determination of the Taft man agers to begin their f.lght for the Hoosier state's electoral votes without delay. JXo Word From Father. There, Is much of the romantic about Martin's case. Despite the fact that his father is a wealthy man and has nlways heretofore been an indulgent father, the prisoner as yet has received no word from his slra which would In dicate that the elder Martin knew of his son's plight. Cablegram after ca blegram has been sent to the father. who Is traveling with his lovlne wife about" Europe, but all eventually re turned to New York, marked "Cannot be located." Last week a nontcard was received from the elder Martin from Belfast, Ire land, and fresh steps were taken to no tify him of his son's condition. in tne eider Martin's silence the perulatori find other sources for their morbid speculation. "Does the father know of the son's plight and refuse to iu mm. or is tin sua lpnorant that his ffsDrinK Is cast In lull with charee a terribly brutal murder hanging over him'1 thev ask. hot nnlv the echo of their uttered words comes Daca in answer to their query. For more man two months voung Martin has been In Jail and yet his father does not know of the fact With the almost perfect police systems In vogue In European cities It is considered hlhlv Improbable that Martin does not know f his sons arreat. "Then," ask the H -culators. "whv doesn't he come to his son's asslstarce?" Secretary Taft Is getting anxious to turn the entire management of his af fairs over to his political engineers. He believes they are betten fitted to handle It than he Is, and also desires to be free to devote his time to the issues of the campaign. He has made the most of his victory, and. thanks to his close application to his work on the diamond and golf links, has succeeded In losing nine pounds and has worked down to 290. Private telegrams from Republican lieutenants over the country assure Mr. Taft that there Is much dissatis faction with the Democratic platform among certain members of that party ana tne usual crop or nreiong .Demo crats"' are writing In that they have taken new vows and will be lined up with the Republicans in the coming campaign. To date Mr. Taft has positively re fused to discuss or comment on either the report of the Denver convention or j the platform adopted. i 50 1 r - - v- I A GOOD' PLAGE TO TTRaiDlE) iran LADIES' IS TAILOR Charged With Non-Support. Her return, therefore. Is awaited with greater Inter est than was displayed when she t-o suddenly disappeared. To cap the cli max in regard to the sister-in-law. It has been positively stated In all sin cerity by those who are close in touch with the case that no one in Portland. not even Mrs. Martin, knows where the sister-in-law is at the present time or has known where he has been at any time since she left Portland. In the meantime, while the specula tors are going over the details of the case In all its . morbidness, Martin lan rulshes in the county Jail.
