V The big British tramp steamer Allan ton loft down this morning bound for Koba and Shanghai with a cargo of 2, 106,018 feet of lumber, valued at $29, 85S. She ha been In the river only a little more than a week. The Allanton will lead a big fleet of lumber-carriers to depart this month. Following her will be the Norwegian steamer Guernsey, which Is now load ing at the mills of the Portland Lvimber company for snangnai, tne riiii steamer Aacot loading at the St. Johns mills for Australia and the Norwegian steamer Tabor, which will be at the mills of the Eastern 4 Western Lumber company this afternoon to complete a cargo for Australia. The Tabor Is on the way up from Knappton on the bay near the mouth of Columbia river, where she took on 760,000 reel or lumoer hit a start. She is being W. McNear A Co.. at fthnnt H ftllfl AAA fpt. The British steamer Dulwich is due to arrive here tomorrow or tne any aner from Ouaymaa to load lumber for Aus tralia under charter to J. J. Moore & Co. The Dulwich was sighted Monday morn ing passing Point Reyes on the Califor nia coast. Allowing her plenty of time, she should be In the Columbia sometime during the night or early tomorrow morning. China and Australia have been buy ing large quantities of lumber during the temporary dullness In the rail mar ket, and several cargoes are to be sent forth for those quartern In the next two or three months. Badly dam aged as a result of bucking the great ice floes of the Behrlng sea. the British steamship Beechley is stranded not far from Nome, according to a dispatch re ceived here last night. The blar vessel is in a decidedly bad osltion and assistance is being rushed vfs. TV forward from Nome while the British rinmh(A Rnlvas-A comDftnv has been asked to have their specially equipped sailer Salvor held In readiness to pro ceed north at an hour's notice to assist in bringing off the unlucky craft and conveying her to a port of repair. Tha dispatch gives no details as to the nature of the Beechley's Injuries beyond aaying that prior to going ashore In dense fog she had been badly strained and had sustained damage to several pistes both at and below the water line. The Beechley, which loaded coal cargo at Nanaimo for Nome, was In company with the steamship Ohio in the Ice for several dys. When she nearea iNome she wad forced to smash her way through the lee pack and upon getting close In wag found to be ao badly In jured that It was decided to beach her at the first favorable spot. Before this could be done, however, she drove ashore and now Is in a worse position than ever. The oil-carrying steamship W. S. Porter Is also reported stranded off tha bar at St. Michaels, with a big hole punched In her bow and a considerable portion of her cargo Jettisoned. Captain Werllch Leaves Navy After Many Years of Service. Captain P. J. Werllch, United States lighthouse Inspector of this district. who retires from the service and the navy today, and who is succeeded by Captain Charles Fremont pond, rormer ly commander of the cruiser Buffalo, issued his last official document yes terday in the shape of a notice to mariners. The notice states that the structure from which Slaughter light was shown ,and which was reported as having gone adrirt has been repiacea ana tne ngnt relighted. Slaughter light is located on it Slaughter, close to the northerly the northerly aide of the dredged chan- shore of Columbia river, and about nl three-fifths of a mile from Mount Cof fin light. Coon Island right, off the easterly side of Coon island, at the westerly en trance to the Willamette river, which was carried away, will he replaced as soon as practicable, but in the mean time the position la marked by a light shown from an arm on a white stake on Coon Island and about ino feet south by west one-half foot west of Its for mer location. Captain Oeorge Conway, superintend ent of the O. R. & N water lines, had a relapse last night and his condition Is strain critical. Sunday he was able to he up and feeling quite well. Yester day he began to weaken again and bv iTwnljrht he whs much worse. l.ceptatn Conway has been ill at his apartments in me ureslln ror several weeks and about five days ago all hope f his recovery was abandoned. But he rallied and improved rapidly until gunday. It was thought he was nut of danger. ALONG THE WATERFROXT. The steam schooner Nome City Is due to arrive here to morrow from Cooa Bay with passengers and general cargo. gh Is being operated In place of the Alliance. The steamer City of Panama leaves Oak street dock this evening for Cons Bav, carrying freight and passengers. She Is being operated in place of the Breakwater. The steam schooner Joban Poulsen arrived at Astoria this morning and left up for Portland. She should ar rive here late this evening. After tak ing wheat in the hold the craft will rn to the mills of the Intnan, Poulsen Lumber company to take on a deckload. of lumber.
