A large and very Interested audience greeted the Yiddish playen In the open ing performance of their engagement at the Helllg last evening. The drama presented waa "Kol-Nldre" the day of atonement and It deals with the m("t bitter period In the world-long tragedy of a race the flays of the Spanish In quisition. There Is something so enormously tragical In the history of the Jews that no drama can hope to epitomise it. All that It ran do Is to suggest In the story of some Incident what was the common lot of the Jewish people. The undergrowth almost pre vented progress, no fresh breeses could ; renetrate the area of gloom, and even ' he animals were silent, like every other phsse of nature existing there. I The writers of today are taking a dtf ferent view of this tropical forest. The latest of them is Maurice pelHfosse one of the leading colonial officials of France, who In a book Just written contradicts many statements of earlier travelers. He says that nowhere has he found the African forest darker than any other dense woodland. The venetatlon In It la certainly more luxuriant snn more crowded together than in a Euro pean forest, but it Is an exaggeration to say they are covered "with Impenetra ble vesetfttlon. Wherevffr the natives live, well worn Evidently having committed suicide, the opposition of Paulus Inquisitor of the t'hurch of Home, to the love of his anugnter euvlra for Burtclle, the court singer. The element of race hatred enters In when It Is learned that Bar telle was formerly a Jewish rabbi but has apparently renounced the faith of his falhrrs and allied himself with that of the Spaniards. The suspense Is well maintained and it Is not until Paulus contrives to discover the Jewish secret tabernacle and Bartello within, reading the scrolls on the Kve of Atonement, that one Is positive of the singer's sympathies. Paulus is told by Bartello that not only is the singer a Jew at heart hut that Elvira, daughter of the Inquisitor, has accepted the Jewish rami ror the sake of her lover. Paulus condemns them both to be burned allvo and they are led off to await their death. There are eight members of the com pany In the play, J. Delafosse had none of the experience of travelers who assert that their gar ment hRVi nrartleallv been strloned off them by the dense and thorny un- 1 dergrowth. As for the reputed feeling of discom fort and oppression In' the depths of the forest, this Is parti v true. When there is no stir In the atmosphere It Is more difficult to breathe In the forest than In the open, and as there is less chance for evaporation the discomfort of excessive perspiration is manifest. It must be remembered, however, that if under such atmospheric condi tions n man breathes more easily in the open land he is at the same time much hotter and so far more uncomfortable.
