The little billing office of the North ern Pacific freight house was crowded esterdav as it has never been he re. Clerks, baggaire Jugglers, rail road presidents, cashiers and railroad men of all sorts and conditions formed constantly eddying swirl about the office door. . ' - What do you guess caused all thin commotion? Nothing but an old shoe a tattered, way worn, old No. 8 shn, completely covered with shipping tags, bearing labels from all over the United States. ' For this is a traveled shoe. It has a history such as no shoe ever dared to claim before In the annals of shoedom. It has roamed the streets of gay Gotham" and is familiar - with the sandy wastes of Oklahoma. Magnolia Beach and Newport have no terrors for the humble piece of footgear. On Its travels it stopped at the home of Ja'rk Johnson,- the iusky aspirant for the championship honors of the prize ring. One of the admirers of the colored man pinned on a tag bearing the following Inscription: "Send me to Tommy Burns wherever he '-may be.- I have been worn by the future champion that the grade to 1?ppkane' U MSwiiP11'! ?VTlght l"v"",'n' W,u. It's next stop will be Ban Fran cisco, where the Portland agents of the Northern Paclfio have consigned It over the Espee. On one of the cards at tached to a shoe string is a direction to return the shoe if not delivered with in 999 days to J. . Byroehle. Silvis. ill. The employes of the railroads all over the country are sending the shoe over the various roads,' eacn one ask ing the next division agent to send it along. When the shoe leaves Portland It , will hear an advertisement of the roso fleRta. The boy's at the Northern Pacific freight office tagged the leather with the Roses fragrant, roses rare" slogan. .One of thei.tags says the shoe was filled with rice and thrown after the departing carriage of a young married couple in Cincinnati. The bridegroom caught the shoe and filled It with silver for the railroad clerks. CONTINUE RIVER MAIL SERVICE BY STEAMER Government Asks for Bids on Contracts Covering ' River Points.
