My parents are will ing and able to par my wav. but I am ambitious and want to be self-supporting, and now have an opportunity of earning a scholarship in a leading col lefte. I ani going to solicit your sub scriptions for the Oregon Journal, whose manager is offering many free scholarships to students who secure the most votes, jcvery man and woman who places subscriptions with me is entitled to cast so many votes for me, which will help me to earn my own tuition. Now. will you be my friends and help me?" . Now boys and girls what do you sup pose would be the answer of the people of Portland? The contest manager is sure -the answer "Yes" would go up from 100, (MM) throats with such en thusiasm that It would rend the air like thunder, and vibrate from graceful Portland Heights to majestic Hood, and reecho back through the beautiful Wil lamette valley with such reassuring force that the ambitious student's bat tle would be won before It had begun. - The confident student will not, bow ever, wait for the people's answer, but will Btart right in now with the assur ance that ha will find it easy to secure subscriptions for Th. Journal when he explains to the people the object of his solicitation, while it Is possible . and probable that uome who enter this con tesf within a month will win scholar ship, it Is not wise to take chances on such;' handicap.'? You will meet many people who are already taking The Journal but whose subscrip tions are not yet tip. By soliciting them early you can get their pledge to renew their orders with you, thus assuring yourself many votes later, on during the summer. . "' - " .. Large numbers of businessmen, pro fessional men and manufacturers will be leaving for summer resorts later on, and it ill be difficult to reach them. The wise students will start In right now canvassing office buildings, stores, factories, hotel, apartment houses and institutions without delay.
