' -rt all grocers. " 4 Transport Sherman Will Not Remain Hero Very Long. ' The government transport Sherman will leave Greenwich wharf at I o'clock tomorrow morning for San Francisco, carrying most of the casuals who came here on her from the orient. She Is being relieved today of baggage belong ing1 to members of the First Infantry who are being conveyed to Vancouver barracks on the steamer Lurllne. The Sherman arrived up yesterday afternoon and attracted considerable at tention. She Is a neat and clean craft, despite the fact that she brought some 1,200 passengers from the Islands and was 48 days on the way. Including all the stops made. Having been thoroughly fumigated at the quarantine station there Is now no danger of smallpox on board the vessel and she rame here with a clean bill of health. The fact that there had been a case of smallpox on board kept visit ors from boarding her yesterday., Ex cept for that thousands of sightseers would probably have gone on board yes terday. As it was, only those having business on board passed over the gang plank. , ALONG THE WATERFRONT. ' The gasoline sloop Condor leavea Greenwich wharf this afternoon with a full cargo of general merchandise for Waldport and Newport. ; The steamer Mascot brought a load of cattle this morning from the lower river for the stockyards in North Portland. ALMOST BY MIRACLE Molse Shulman. aged T years, was struck by Fulton car 10 Sunday morn ing at 8:35 o'clock at the corner of First and Mill streets and escaped death by a miracle. He was playing in the street and did not see the approaching car. He started to run across tne tracks when the car was within 100 feet of him. ' The motorman clanged the gong but the little fellow appeared not to hear it. instantly the air was thrown on and the power reversed., The boy had just cleared the tracks when the cor ner of the car struck htm In the back. He was thrown several feet, his clothing being almost torn off. Outside of a bruised head he suffered no serious In Jury.
