" A raw years ago ianrurnia waa one of the prominent wheat ex- Sortlng states but gradually the change as been brought about so that r In stead of exporting wheat In large quan tities the state Is now drawing for the aame upon the wheat belts of Ore gon and Washington. During the entire cereal season from July 1 of last year to date, California sent away but 10 vessels carrying wheat and - two ' of these cargoes consisted largely of barley. A large percentage of this week was sent from Oregon on eoasters when the lumber traffic fall oft to such an extent that Jt'was found good business to carry wheat la the hold and lumber for deckload. Most of i these windjammer-, would have come north, for their cargoes but for the reason that when coastwise freights were low It was about as cheap to give the short haul to the coasters as to have the ungainly sailing vessels make the run up the coast which In a good many Instances would mean the hiring of a new crew In addition, to extra port charges, pilotage and- tow age. The vessels had brought general freight from Europe to the Bay City which accounted for their being there. The 10 vessels that carried wheat from Ban - Francisco since July ' 1 this year, are the French barks Francois, Join- 5 Me, Asnleres, La Rochefoucauld and eneral Foy.vthe British , ships Monk barns. Dunfermline and Dynomene, the British bark Mueselorag and the Nor wegian bark Prlnca Robert. ' In the meantime 2 cargoes of barley were shipped from California ports. According to data , compiled by tha If reheats" Exchange of- -thlaetty- the Paclflo northwest has shipped about 7.000,000 bushels more wheat, Including flour reduced to wheat, during the 11 months of the cereal season, than dur ing the corresponding tlma of the next best season on record, the total be ing 48,881,912 bushel-, Tha second best showing was made during the sea son 1906-6 when tha shipments for the 11 months of the year aggregated 88.- seasons: Grand total season to date. .43,881.911 Bama period, season 1906-07. .81,854,903 Bame period, season 1805-06. .88,147,865 cm, ...init iani.ni: it mi it 8ame period, season 1903-04. .20,866,475 Bama period, season 1902-03., 80,410,286 Same neriod. season 1901-02.. 84.046.816 Bama period, season 1900-01, .27,665,127 Bama period, season 1899-00. ,18,006,150 Same period, season 1898-99.. 23,198,6 07 Bama period, season 1897-98.. 26,624,481 Portland barley exports July 1, 1,001,078 bushels. . . From the London Telegraph. Two Vryburg men, Sidney Smith, a well-known looal farmer,, and 3. N. Bry mer, have had a terrible experience in the Kalahari desert, where they were three days under a blazing sun with neither food nor water and hardly came through alive. They left home together in a Cape cart drawn by six oxen to visit George Lennox ef Kingston, a farm some dis tance into the desert. The travelers Were mainly relying for their water aup nly on the trammas. a snecles of wild melon which grows abundantly on the sand dunes and conserves Its water for months, but they found to their dismay that these had all been oonsumed by the flocks and herds . of , the nomadic natives - oi tne naianan. meagre stock of water they had brought with them soon gave out and after trekking for two daya without a drink the oxen collapsed. The travelers were still, about SO miles from their destination. Abandoning the cart and oxen they de termined to make the rest of the jour ney on foot. Eight miles tramp through the heavy jsand reduced Mr. Brvmer to a state of exhaustion, and leaving him behind Mr. Smith tolled on with hi na- tlva servant in the testft of a seereteln wind to attempt to make the nearest water, Mr. Lennox's farm, which was his only hops. In six hours he had be come quite deaf, one eye was almost Diincv nis tongue nao snnveieo up- ana his palate and Hps were coated with a thick skin. He had left Brvmer at 9:30 St night At dawn next morning' his Kaffir boy threw up the sponge, and sad at heart Smith had to push on with Ills oHie doa-aa hi a only companion. Aa hour or two later he was over taken ; by two young Transvaalera Messrs. Gerber and Le Roux, on horse back. They had lost a horse and a mule from thirst not far from the nolnl where Mr. Brymer had been left lying on tne veio. . ney naa reuna erymer Still alive, but having no" water them selves Were unable to heln. and had pushed on, for the farm. , Le Roux was In a stats of collapse from thirst, hav ing to be held on his horse by Oerber, Tha two mounted men went on ahead. promising to send back help to Smith and the others. When still a long distance from Mr. Lennox's farm Mr. Smith met some Damara women (refugees from German Southwest Africa, carrying water in aourds on their heads. Incredible aa it may seem, these inhuman people abso lutely refused to give Mr. Smith -either water or assistance. ' Eventually ne managed to obtain a small cupful by fnrnA. hut he was too exhausted to struggle for more. At this-point his fine collie lay down and afterward suc cumbed to thirst. Slightly Invigorated by his meagre refreshment, Mr. Smith tolled on. The sun was now high overhead and the heat' Intense. He was following the course of an old river bed and fortun ately was able to obtain some slight shelter from a few- trees along the course. His method Was to dash for ward for a couple of hundred yards to the nearest tree and then lie down to remunerate for the next effort 8a hit held to his task until at length Mr, Len nox's farm came in signc Here Kind hands took him in charge ana tended him so well that after a few hours he waa able to talk rationally and walk about. '..'" v ' Mr. Henn of the camel corps of the Cape Mounted Police, who happened to be at the farm with his camel, immedi ately saddled up and set out with the most commendable .diligence . to search for the poor fellows who had been forced to remain In the desert Thanks to Mr. Henn's promptitude and energy the lives of Mr. Brymer and the natives were saved, aitnougo tney were in the last stares of exhaustion and Presented n most deplorable sight when they were brought In.
