waa one of the prominent wheat ex-
Sortlng states but gradually the change
as been brought about so that r In
stead of exporting wheat In large quan
tities the state Is now drawing for
the aame upon the wheat belts of Ore
gon and Washington.
During the entire cereal season from
July 1 of last year to date, California
sent away but 10 vessels carrying wheat
and - two ' of these cargoes consisted
largely of barley. A large percentage
of this week was sent from Oregon
on eoasters when the lumber traffic
fall oft to such an extent that Jt'was
found good business to carry wheat
la the hold and lumber for deckload.
Most of i these windjammer-, would
have come north, for their cargoes but
for the reason that when coastwise
freights were low It was about as cheap
to give the short haul to the coasters
as to have the ungainly sailing vessels
make the run up the coast which In
a good many Instances would mean the
hiring of a new crew In addition, to
extra port charges, pilotage and- tow
age. The vessels had brought general
freight from Europe to the Bay City
which accounted for their being there.
The 10 vessels that carried wheat from
Ban - Francisco since July ' 1 this year,
are the French barks Francois, Join-
5 Me, Asnleres, La Rochefoucauld and
eneral Foy.vthe British , ships Monk
barns. Dunfermline and Dynomene, the
British bark Mueselorag and the Nor
wegian bark Prlnca Robert. ' In the
meantime 2 cargoes of barley were
shipped from California ports.
According to data , compiled by tha

SOUTH AFRICAN DESERT.
Suffering of Party That Attempted
Crossing Without Water.
From the London Telegraph.
Two Vryburg men, Sidney Smith, a
well-known looal farmer,, and 3. N. Bry
mer, have had a terrible experience in
the Kalahari desert, where they were
three days under a blazing sun with
neither food nor water and hardly came
through alive.
They left home together in a Cape
cart drawn by six oxen to visit George
Lennox ef Kingston, a farm some dis
tance into the desert. The travelers
Were mainly relying for their water aup
nly on the trammas. a snecles of wild
melon which grows abundantly on the
sand dunes and conserves Its water for
months, but they found to their dismay
that these had all been oonsumed by
the flocks and herds . of , the nomadic
natives - oi tne naianan. meagre
stock of water they had brought with
them soon gave out and after trekking
for two daya without a drink the oxen
collapsed. The travelers were still, about
SO miles from their destination.
Abandoning the cart and oxen they de
termined to make the rest of the jour
ney on foot. Eight miles tramp through
the heavy jsand reduced Mr. Brvmer to
a state of exhaustion, and leaving him
behind Mr. Smith tolled on with hi na-
tlva servant in the testft of a seereteln
wind to attempt to make the nearest
water, Mr. Lennox's farm, which was
his only hops. In six hours he had be
come quite deaf, one eye was almost

promising to send back help to Smith
and the others.
When still a long distance from Mr.
Lennox's farm Mr. Smith met some
Damara women (refugees from German
Southwest Africa, carrying water in
aourds on their heads. Incredible aa it
may seem, these inhuman people abso
lutely refused to give Mr. Smith -either
water or assistance. ' Eventually ne
managed to obtain a small cupful by
fnrnA. hut he was too exhausted to
struggle for more. At this-point his
fine collie lay down and afterward suc
cumbed to thirst.
Slightly Invigorated by his meagre
refreshment, Mr. Smith tolled on. The
sun was now high overhead and the
heat' Intense. He was following the
course of an old river bed and fortun
ately was able to obtain some slight
shelter from a few- trees along the
course. His method Was to dash for
ward for a couple of hundred yards to

him so well that after a few hours he

Mr. Henn of the camel corps of the
Cape Mounted Police, who happened to
be at the farm with his camel, immedi
ately saddled up and set out with the

forced to remain In the desert Thanks
to Mr. Henn's promptitude and energy

WHEN
CURED
The methods 1 devised twenty-five years
ago for treating men's diseases proved a rad
ical step in medical science. Those methods
' have enabled me to cure diseases that were
formerly regarded as Incurable. In working
out my methods I held the theory that Nerv
ous Debility, for Instance, was not a consti
tutional or functional ailment, but a prostat
ic affection, and therefore merely local, tl
reasoned that Its constitutional effects were
imply the results of a tremendous waste of
energy due to Inflammation of the ' prostate
gland; that this being true, a local treatment
could alone sffsot a cure. Thereupon I de
vised the treatment I employ today with such
marked success. Indeed, I have never known
this treatment to fall to effect a complete ,
and permanent cure In a comparatively short
time. .v !. .'
My treatments for other diseases peculiar to
"men are also along oritgnal lines-, and are
squally successful. My special treatment la an .,
open door to manly vIrdt and all the nleas-.
ures that belong to pxrfect health. Any man , ,
may avail himself of my services. It has been and is my life's work to
aid afflicted men, alleviate their suffering and restore them to health
and vigor. I have therefore placed the charge for my services within the
easy reach of any man. no matter what his circumstances. To PROVE
my confidence in the results of my treatment, and as an act of good faith.
I VILL. WAIT FOR MY FEE UNTIL YOU ARE CURED. No man could
be fairer than that. I take all the risk. You take none whatever, You
have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose. . -
Delay Is Dangerous
Men whose vitality is exhausted, those who have some private disease
lurking In their system, and who are prematurely old, while still young in
years broken-down wrecks of what they ought to be, and who want to be
strong and to feel as vigorous as they formerly were, to enjoy life again
to win back the vim, vigor and vitality of perfect healthshould con
sult with me before It Is too lats.
Are the Following Symptoms Yours?
" Do you feel that your manly strength Is slipping away? Are you weak,
nervous, fretful and gloomy, have pains and aches in different parts of
the body, your sleep disturbed; weak back, headache, despondency, melan
cholia, palpitation of the heart, unable to concentrate your thoughts, poor
memory, easily fatigued, specks before the eyes, aversion to Society, lack
of ambition, will power depleted, dlaay spells, poor elroulatlon, feel cold,
lifeless and worn out, primarily Induced in many eases through abuses,
excesses, overwork, etcT If so, then I warn you. Do not delay ' longer.
I CURE ALL DISEASES OF T.Sn

such troubles as pertnatorrhoea. fcostYlgor. Varicocele; BTdrooell CoS
treated Disorders, Contagions Ioo4 Poison, Stricture and 'Weakness'' can
be cured perfectly so as to stay cured. Of course I use different meth
