We have no rivers, bat there are plenty of valley and hills; the island is 21 miles In cir cumference, nine miles across and has a population of 4,300. We raise the finest potatoes In the world and get II -a hundredweight for them; beer is very cheap and wine t shilling a gallon. Cigarettes cost next to nothing and we have the finest spring water you could imagine. "Then, again, no one vf dies on the rock except from old age. Yesterday I had a letter from home stating that my grandmother died, aged 95. Many feel young when reach I nr the century mark. It's the climate. We've got it" ELLERIC COMING HERE. Will Crop conditions In' the great wheat belt of eastern Oregon and the entire Columbia river basin were never better. Frospect for a bumper wheat erop were never, better. -Eecent bountiful rains r. have nut the crowing plants into 11ns form and a few weeks of warm weather will ripen the heads and turn the straw . into a goiaen yeuow. This report is brought here by Al fred Tuokerr manager of Meyer, Wilson & Co.'s business in this district, who lias just returned from an extended tour of the wheat belts, In the interest " "ipt Ms Ann, whlch im ne -4h oldest and most prominent on the coast en gaged In bringing cement and general cargoes from Europe to Ban Francisco, this port -and Puget sound. . ' ' "Conditions certainly do look promis ing in the large wheat belts," said Mr. Tucker this morning, "and a bumper crop Is practically assured. Growers say prospects were never so good be fore and they are more than pleased with the outlook.; The rain came Just In time and has continued lone enough to insure against any possible damage from lack, of moisture. Sunshine will be wanted in a few days and they feel there is very little danger of not getting ' It with the season so well advanced. Prolonged rains at this time give every reason to believe that fine weather will favor harvesting time, a prospective feature not lost sight of by the cheer- ' ful wheat farmers." ' With an enormous wheat crop and the north bank road ready to haul grain over Its new track, river boats tapping the country not handy to the railroads and the O. R. A N. hauling the big rrops of the country contiguous to Its lines, the Oregon metropolis bids fair ; to enjoy the greatest wheat exporting season In history. This season Portland PULXTOUnU 111 J.UUIIIA .110. za fJ of prominence as a wheat shipping port in the United States for two consecu tive months, and it is said that next yearUt will- probably aive the great exporting points of the Atlantic' coast close run for position at the bead of the list avery month. , 4- Work on the north bank road's Im mense wharf and warehouse at the foot f Barter street, in North Portland, is progressing as rapidly as possible so as to have It ready for business when the new crop begins to pour in. The new dock will give the port additional facilities for dispatching grain cargoes snd it- is predicted that 5,000,000 bush els will probably be sent away each month next fall, whereas heretofore 2.000,000 bushels a month' have been considered sxoellent business. i ...
