There 'are 10 . large tramp steamers due to arrive here shortly to load lum ber for foreign destinations,- nearest at hand being , the - Norwegian steamer Guernsey, which Is to take, part cargo at Tongue Point and finish here. She, too, goes to thlna. The British steam er Yeddo Is also booked to arrive here soon to . load for i Australia! and New Zealand. Thla will bf toe first direct .shipment of lumber made, from this jport to the land of the Maories for sev eral months. The shipment Is to be discharged at Auckland. .i - The schooner Willie K. Home Is load ing at the mills of the Portland Lum ber company for Callao, Peru, and she Is the only vessel here now loading for eign in lumberr--although- down ' at Tongue Point the British bark Kelburn Is receiving lumber for Cardiff and London. The Steamer Will Finish Car$o at Tacoma. , - Captain Nelson, master of the Norwegian Steamer Hornelen, which' left down yesterday morning from the mills of the Portland Lumber, company bound for La Boca, Panama, via Tacoma, Was formerly engaged as deckhand on the " river steamer Joseph Kellogg, which is still In commission on the Portland-Kelso route. He left here as a sailor. and rapidly worked his way to master mariner, meeting with such success that he now commands one-of the largest and . best freighters in the Norwegian merchant marine. . - , .Captain Nelson is still a young man. While here he paid a visit to the old Kellogg to see if any of the old boys ' were still on-efk. He found the sai old docks, but the old shipmates had disappeared, although a' few of them are still along the front in various capacities on different steamers. . Islands and went to pieces. " The steamer Alliance, Captain Olson, sailed for Coos Bay last night with a large list of passengers and a full cargo of freight. She will make all speed possible in order to return to Astoria Wednesday morning to take out an ex cursion to meet the warship fleet. - The steamer Eureka, Captain Noren, will arrive at Martin's dock earla this morning from Eureka via Coos Bay and ha will leave down tomorrow night The Eureka is operating regularly be tween this port and ttureaa ana toucnes at Coos Bar both going and-coming. The steamer Breakwater, 'Captain Macgenn, ts due to arrive here' this af ternoon from Coos Bay. It was reported that the Breakwater would also carry exoursionists from Astoria to see tha fleet, but Captain Macgenn denied the report wnen nere. ' WAYS BEING ERECTED. The Russian tramn steamer Kunearl. which was reported several imonths ago as having been given ' orders to pro ceed to this port to load grain, but failed to get awav from Ouavmaa. where she had delivered a cargo of coal, because of debts hanging over her, is said to be still lying Idle at the Mexi can port. , . , . it is reported that her owners Will have to pay or put up security Xoj some J40.OOO before the craft can be released and in the meantime she is getting deeper in debt every .day, be cause, a crew drawing wage's is on board waiting to be paid off or sent away. The British shin Ancaios, which ar rived here several weeks ago from Australia with a cargo of coal, is in much the same fix, the sailors hav ing libeled her for wages earned from the Australian port to the Columbia river. They refuse to leave because then their money would be forfeited. Captain Ferguson, who came out here from Nova Scotia to take command of tha vessel upon the resignation of Cap tain Ritchie, is Sick in one of the hos pitals. He is a very old man, but hopes lor nis recovery are enieriainea. it is said that the owners of Uio Ancaios Will nave no trouble getting the ves sel released as soon as its affairs can be adjusted. NEW BUOYS PLACED. as soon as the ways are in shape, which will be very soon. The steamer will be one of the most up-to-date on this coast and will have high speed. It is under stood that the craft Is to ply on Fuget sound, but the exact route bas not yet been disclosed.
