This city will move June 16 officially. On that day its ad ministrative officers and offices and the office cats, of which there are dosens, will leave the old city hall (and its mil lions of unofficial cockroaches), at La Salle apd Washington streets, and go to temporary quartern at 204 and 06 Randolph street. The wrecking; fang will at once be put to work on the old stone pile that has been Chicago's offi cial home , since 1884. The, work' of razing- the old city hall and putting In the concrete caisson folmdatlons for the new structure will be consolidated end Is to proceed simultaneously. This will be a unique procedure In the his tory of public buildings, and Is consid ered by optimistic citizens to mark an effort to handle city affairs in a business-like-manner. It has been discov ered that the stone in the old building is of such a quality that It may be crushed and used in making the con crete for the caissons for the founda tion of the new structure. Samples of "the stone will be tested in a stone crusher, and if it can be used there will be a big saving. Cook county was forced to pay $79,000 to get rid of the material in the old courthouse, the twin to the city hall. In preparing for the new one. In the new city hall. Chi cago at last will provide public com fort stations, as is done generally In Kuropean cities. Two such stations will be put in the city hall. The personal estate of John Alexander Dowle, "Prophet Elijah III," who build ed cities, who established big Indus tries, who dealt in millions and who held the financial destinies of his thou sands of followers in the hollow of his hand for a while now proves to be reduced to 11,200, of which Mrs. Jane Howie hag been awarded $400 as her widow's dowry. The splendid robes of office have faded, the Jewels have dls nppeared. the handsome furnishings of his home have been, taken away bv re ceivership, the erstwhile glories of the founder of Zion are memories only. Mrs. Dorie s memory of them has, however, prompted her to demand of the present receiver of Zion many items of personal property In Shiloh house, which she claims as her own. She has asked for the furnishings of her bed room, for household articles, including "a ;ilIlow case containing 11 Infant robes,' garments of cherished maternal associations. She has asked also for a mahogany bedroom set Inherited from Esther Dowie, her daughter,' who was burned to death. The value of the real estate no one seems to know, and It may prove to be more valuable than is expected. Mrs. Dowle has a claim upon it. She and the son, Gladstone, the "unklssed Gladstone," according to his father, are now In the chicken business on the Michigan estate, Ben MacDhtH. near Muskegon. Gladstone, incident ally, is practicing law and recently has shattered the belief his father fostered, that he was "unklssed," for evidently Prophet Elijah III did not know all that happened to his son. Gladstone is re ported to have declared: "Of course I have been kissed; first when I was rea sonably young, at school, and since then It has happened at reasonable intervals off and on, and I hope His ges tures Indicated his hope for other ten der impresses in the days to come. He declares that he "come near being en- faged once" in Zion City; that he may e again. Every railway and lake transportation line entering Chicago is scraniblln a share of the big shipments for e ling fo of th grain that changed hands May 1. when the May deliveries were made and paid for under board of trade rules, and which now will go forward to Its ulti mate destination. The focus of this rivalry for traffic is the board of trade, for the grain and provisions bought and sold there run Into tonnage figures which are enormous. The cured meats in 1907 totaled 763,259.255 pounds, and irraln and flour 7e.950,T2 pounds. The iigures incidentally throw new ligh upon me great iceitimate business Huch exchanges, which has been con rusea witn tne gambling done in thei counterfeits, the "buckctshoDs" whlcl have been persistently fought by ttvem iur years. j.n oraer 10 maintain a con tinuous market for livestock, the pack lng; companies sell in the provision plti for future delivery those meat prod' ucis wnicn must De cured, and on which they need to borrow, as other wise for lack of capital, the record of 7.201,061 nogs arid S. 305. 314 cattle mar keted for cash in Chicago In 1907 Would not have been possible. About 4.000,000 Dushels or grain soon will leave Chi cago elevators, ot which the lake boat have got about 2.000,000 bushel. Th elevators here, with capacity of 63.000 00O bushels, will be practically emptied before the crops of this year are avail able, in fact, before part of the new crop nns been planted. In his address here he said: "There are today fhilanthropists so called who believe hat 4 giving the people libraries that they might study out present day philosophy, they are accomplishing great food," said Archblshoo Glennon. And here are others who spend their time in social settlement work or lecturing or giving away their libraries and es tablishing their social settlements, but I want you to understand that phllan throphy divorced from Christ is not charity. The philosophy taught In your schools and universities today Is Just as brutal as It is repugrnant. This phil osophy of evolution, emanating from the brain of Darwin and Spencer, makes for brutality and retards progress. What Is the use of struggling if there Is noth ing to be attained? Where Is there an appearance of charity In this system? The strong succeed and the weak per Jsh. Now what do you think of your university professors who urge this theory upon an unsophisticated people? And yet there are in this city 3.000 people known to you whose hands and hearts and lives are consecrated to God and to charity. These nuns move along as a great, silent force, and where in their fives do you find the law of evo lution a struggle for pelf? If that theory bo the law of life, then these women are the world's saddest failures. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd are particularly worthy of mention, for their lives are devoted to the uplifting of the woman who has fallen into sin." Archbishop Glennon sees dread times ahead for our country, when the true merits of so called phllanthrophy will be tried in the balance of necessity He asserted: "It Is a recognized fact that we fast are reaching a social crisis, with our millionaire on one hand and the pauper on the other. When -that day comes the philanthropist, sitting In his upholstered chair, witf'not tar the occasion. lie will be told that It is not a lecture that is wanted, but that it Is bread." utilities 1s evidenced by th selection of Chicago as the headquarters of the Independent telephone Interests and the chief manufacturing -center for both BeU and independent apparatus. Twenty years ago the east was dominant in all line -of public servlc activity. The phenomenal growth of' th -country since . then has., reversed conditions. What this growth has been in on branch is Interestingly summarised by a writer In one of th curent maga slnes. "Th 'Bell report for 1407 shows that theraar now nearly -4,00.0,-000 - subscribers, or 'stations," In that system," says th Saturday Evening Post. ."The number of lqcal messages averages 18.000.000 daily; the number of 'long distance' messages nearly 600. 000 dally. Many more long-dlstanc messages are sent by telephone than by telegraph. Gross earnings of the vari ous 'Bell' exchanges amounted to $120, 000,000 last year (comparing, for ex am pie. with $33,000,000 gross earnings of Western Union telegraph). The re pert gives actual value of 'Bell' plants and 'working capital as $689,000,000. - If reports from the 'Independent' com panies were available these figures would be considerably enlarged; and this Is nearly all a creation of th last 20 years." , By the time for the Republican in vention in June, the downtown street car lines will be on dress parade, par ticularly those in Wabash avenue, on which the Coliseum is located. Presi dent Mitten of the Chicago City Kali- ways company, has declared that the delegates snail see a sample of a per fect street car line. According to reports Just made to commercial organizations here, the water In the Chicago river and the $53,000,000 drainage canal has become, by filling in of sediment, much too shallow for commerce. The reports have startled business Interests here and seem likely to arouse them to ef fective action. According to figures submitted to the real estate board, the shallow water In the drainage canal was due to neglect to dredge the chan nel, and the chokel channel was the cause of a hack flow to Iake Michigan during freshets In February. The re port gave the depth In some places 20 feet from the dock line at two feet. In the west fork of the old Chicago river, there was shown to bo only 12 feet in several places. At other points the depth Is 13 feet, with a maximum of 24 feet. During the past 17 years, except for turning basins, less than $450,000 has been expended In Improv ing the Chicago river, and $91,000 of that amount was expended in the pur chase of projecting: land. The rovern. ment engineer, Colonel Bixby, has put the tonnage receipts of the two har bors, Calumet and Chicago, baring Iron ore, at 1.506.781 tons less In 1906 than was received in 1889 in the old river alone. , That the west is at last outstripping the enst In the development of public Ha made a life study of roots and herbs and in that study discovered and la giving to the world his wonderful remedies. no Mercury, poisons or Drags Usod k cures wiutont Operation or Without th Aid Of a Knit.
