At all draraitta ' Wilton Lackeys seems at last to have I rendered an Inestimable service to the English-speaking staged that of effect ually drumming Hall Caine out of the ; tolerance of theatre-gbers. "The Bond-j man" does the work. I can't concelvei of anyone who has seen "The Bondman": wasting any more time with Mr. Cain and his Manx heroes, his Scripture-quoting old nincompoops, his sulphur mines and his. highly colored sacrifices. It would be entertaining to let Mr. Lackaye himself tell what he thinks of Mr. Calne. He has a reputation for sar casm that reaches far and wide. An essay by W. L. on himself as Jason should make excellent reading far ahead of anything: he is able to fur nish at the Hellig this week. Every fa miliar Manx trick Is exploited. There Is ; rand pa, toothless and full of awful okea. Grandpa deserves lynching, 'here are tlie customary Calne chil dren, Introduced without the shadow of an excuse there merely to add to the Calne reailsm, as In the third act lie fills the house with sulphur so no one will miss the fact that it's a real mine the brothers are working In. And there's the young Manxman who goes forth to seek his fortune, and, of ' course, becomes Dresident of Sicily. The tricks rather palled upon the Hel-1 certain delight In seeing' what means Jsson takes of working- out his storv the plot was at no time obscured from the simplest-minded person there; but the fste of the bondman was noc hard to Imagine. The eyes of several man agers of cheap melodrama bouses fairly eTeamed when the third act. with the sulphur mines, the red fire, the awful steneh. the gleaming lights, the ore cars, the armed guards ana, oest of all, the final explosion and cataract of noise, was nulled off. What a hummer or a Jason Bt. ' George Daglenn would make! I trust that if he bas the ODDortunitv St. George will ro and see Mr. Lackaye. It Drobaniy has been guessed by this time that Lackaye has not added ' any thing to his reputation by playing "The Bondman." He cuts an absurd figure throusrhout. annearing first In Bailor'. garb that is not becoming, later In a combination of corduroy riding clothes, black flowing tie and puttees, and ntlll later In cloaks and plumes. Mr. Lackaye is not that Kina or an actor. He isn't romantic. The boast of his press agents has always been that you would never take him for an artistic person. Nnr would you In the part of Jason.
