Salem'a players muffed easy flies In the field and other wise seemed up In the air most of the time. Robinson, for Oregon City, pitched an 'excellent game. He struck out three men and allowed four hits. Bauer's racing birds captured sec ond and fourth places In the pigeon race from Eugene to Portland yesterday srhoon, tha first official race of a cef five to be run this summer VfcTbirds. The distance from Eugene to the loft In Portland was covered In 2 hours and (9 Vi minutes, being practically a mile In 1 minutes. Sixty odd birds took part In the flight from the col lege town and the time Is fairly - good In view of the heavy rain that prevailed during parts of the flight. Fifth place Was taken by H. K. Brown, sixth by H. H. Wilson, seventh by K. Lulls and eighth by T. H. Bechill. All but six or the birds arrived at the loft within two hours after the win ner was timed in, making an unusually large percentage. Minor Ball Games. The Newsboys' baseball team yester day defeated the Goose Hollow team 28 to 4. The game was a walk-away for the Newsboys. Hunt being the only man -who could steal on him. The Frakes bunched two hits, a stolen base and two bases on bails, to gether with a passed ball, and regis tered four runs without half trying in the opening canto. Hurlburt started In to pitch for the East Slders, but developed a streak of wlldness and after he had passed three men Gardner took his place and kept It through that game and the next one. With the .arrival In the city this morning of Pitcher Garrett and Catcher Walsh, advance guard of the Portland baseball team of the Coast league. In terest In the opening sjame tomorrow has been given added Impetus. Both players bring glowing accounts of the work of the Beavers in the last series and are confident that the first series of the season In Portland will be Just as profitable to the McCredle bunch. Both players after reporting at the smoke stands hied themselves to the ball partk to get a squint at the grounds. Then they hurried away to get rooms In the Immediate vicinity and will practice there this afternoon. They came north before the team in order to condition the spltball artist, who says he is to pitch the first game. This is at variance with the announce ment of Judge W, W. McCredle that Plnnance, the Indian, was to pitch the opening game. But Walter probably knows what he Is doing In sending the Texan north to condition himself.
