The meeting of tho Republican slate committee in this city to lay msrks the real opening of the presidential campaign In the Em pire Mm to. Pursuant to the call of Chairman Timothy h. Woodruff the committee went into session behind closed doors, this afternoon to decide upon the tlmend place fur holding the slate convention. The state convention. In addition to namins four delegatea-at-iargK to the n.itlunul convention, will chouae h new state committee which will conduct the fall campaign. Now th:it tho ceneral assembly at Al bany la hearing the close of Its session theie Is nothing- to prevent an early couvttiillnri, and It has been practically decided upon to hold the convention the second week In April. Tho convention will probably he held In this city. The primaries to ulect delegates to the as sembly district conventions for the pur-, KObt) of sending- delegates to the state convention, which In turn Is to elect the dejiates-at-large, are by law to be held the lust Tuesday of March, which this yenr will be March 31. The same trl- marles will elect delegates to the don gress district convention. I he congress districts are autono mous when It comes to choosing; dele gates, so that the state convention will not be nhle to instruct more than the four dolegates-at-large. Whether or not the delegates will be Instructed Is said lo rHt entlrelyy with Governor Huahea. If the governor and his friends want them Instructed they will undoubtedly be sent to Chicago iileda-ed to vote for Hughes for the presidential nomination. I lie meetlDs or the slate committee linn nat.irally given rise to much gossip concerning the probable makeup of the "big four" and other matters pertaining to Republican politics in New York. The candidacy of Hughes for the presi dential nomination seems to be about the only rolnt on which the rival fac tions are able to a tree. On all other matters the rival factions are deter mined lo flrht it out to the bitter end. Chairman Woodruff and his friends. who are In close touch with President Roosevelt, declare there will be no com promise with the Odell-Black-Brackett contingent. If they are able to control the convention neither Odell, Black nor Brnckett win be amonr the four delo- gateVat-large to the Chicago conven tion. If ihelr plans go through. Chair man Woodruff and Secretary Root will be two of the "bla four." The other two have not been decided unon. though Secretary Cortelyou. President Schur man of Cornell university and ex-Mayor Beth Low are belnB considered. it seems to be accepted as a fore gone conclusion that the two national convention veterans. Senators Piatt and Ucpew. are to be left outside the breast works. While the 10 or 12 men who control tho Republican organization In New York are chary about expressing themselves plainly In the matter, then- have allowed the Impression to become current that neither of the aerators Is ilkely to ko to Chicaao as delegate-at large. 1 he explanation is that a new nollt leal generation is In control of this Rtate, a new pag has been turned, and many "old. familiar faces" will not he seen as often as formerly In high places in iiepuoncnn national conventions.
