' : t THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, 7 PORTLAND, ' FRIDAY -EVENINO. : MARCH g, 1908. i -.7:..; ' V s ' ' y (ES RECORD Pain . , , . 11 TIME OFF HORN : British Bark Crowij of India 'Shows Bemarkable Speed ; in Bough Sea. SAILOR FALLS TO A DEATH FB03I MAST Captain Gilbert Report! Having Had to Pat Into Port Shortly After Leaving Antwerp to Get New Crew to Replhce Mutineers. Ten days from 60 degree south on the Atlantic to the same latitude On the Paclflo la believed to be the fastest Ball ing ever acoomjillshed by a windjammer In rounding Cape Horn. Thla record waa .established by the British bark Crown of India. Captain R. H. Gilbert, which arrived here yeaterday afternoon with a cargo of .cement from Antwerp. Captain Gilbert aaya he never aaw a Vessel -cleave threugh the water ao fast h.fnr. altknii.h h h. ..II. r .... . and there waa great rejoicing on board when the cold and disagreeable weather , of the Cape waa left behind ao faat that no ' one naraiy had time to reaiiae it. An Idea of how the four-master bowled along might be gained from the fact that she covered the distance between 10 south In the Atlantic and Btaten Island In exactly la hours.. Thla waa perhaps the fastest bit of aalling ever reeled -off. . Despite her great speed, it la aald the deeply-laden vessel did not make muuh commotion except for send ing a smother of foam before her bow. The voyage from the English channel to the Columbia waa made in 123 days, and Captain Gilbert reckons his run from the channel because he waa forced to put Into port there for a new crew, the men signed at Antwerp having be come mutinous the very first day out Every effort . to restore peace proved futile and so after a week's cruising about It waa decided to put the refrac tory tars ashore. After getting a fresh start It took 11 aays irom the channel to tne equator. u When off Btaten island, about 60 days U(, nth out. the Crown of India fell in company i rrench bar Kugene iter- f aline, 71 daya out from Antwerp for ortland with a cargo of cement. Tho Bergallne evidently missed the favor able wlnda that sent the Britisher on her way with such remarkable speed, because she has not yet reported at the mouth of the Columbia. On November 18 gloom waa cast over the otherwise pleasant voyage, when Otto Rimmer, a young seaman, fell from the rigging to instant death. At work on the Jigger mast he missed his hold and shot to the deck, a distance of more than 100 feet. He was burled the next day. The Crown of India will carry wheat to Europe after having discharged the cement cargo consigned to W. P. Fuller & Co. Captain Gilbert was here some years ago as master of the British ship William Mitchell. His visit that time attracted attention because of the fact that the vessel was detained 43 days off the mouth of the Columbia river by a succession of terrific storms, and she was given up for lost. The Crown of India Is in the stream until a wharf becomes available. ;Weakens , Headache, rheumatism, . neuralgia, or pains of any nature weaken tne sys-' ternthey are a strain up on the nerves. '. Steam Schooner Floats Bottom Up Off Lower California, Another mystery of the sea haa come to light and a solution will be eagerly awaited along the coast. During the re cent storms an unknown steam schooner foundered off the coast and the derelict Is now drifting along with the waves a couple hundred miles off the lower California coast. Captain Daewerlts of the schooner Forester saw the derelict-on February 2 and has reported the matter to the hy- droaraDhlc office. Caotain Daewerlts' report states that to htm the derelict .appeared to be a steam schooner, bottom ud and standing about five feet above the water with the foremast , floating i Captain Daewerlts sighted the derelict 1 in latitude 3i degrees. 16 minutes north and longitude 123 degrees, 12 minutes , west.
