Remember ' tna name m take no other. - COUIICIL SHOWS II RESPECT FOR VETO Vehicle Tax Ordinance Is Passed by Big Ten Over .Mayor's Objection. As announced In yesterday's Journal the city council voted down Mayor Lane's veto on the vehicle tax ordinance which waa ' paased at the laat council meeting and the measure will now be come a law. In order to nasa the ordinance over the mayor' a veto 10'votea were required and the change In votes resulted In a I line-up of the big 10 against tne usual minority of t. Councilman Dunning and Belding voted against the measure wnen it came up. two weeas ago Dm leu in line yesterday ana votea ior tne ordinance. Councilman Concannon. who voted for the ordinance at the last council meeting, changed over and-voted to auataln the mayor a veto. According to the provisions of the new law all vehicles used ror pieaaure only are exempt from taxation, while the tax on the remaining onea ranges from $1.60 a year for single vehicles to $10 a year for those drawn by a team. Each additional horae meana an ! additional tax of $2 a year. The fight on the vehicle tax ordinance covera a perioa or nearly two years. It was started by the draymen, -who i wished to ba relieved of a part of the taxation on vehiclea. Soon after the change waa proposed leading merchants of the city were drawn into the fray j and many verbal battlea were rough i out before the committee handling the subject. The ordinance finally passed waa introduced by councilman Meneiee as -a compromise measure. Councilman Kellaher threatened eev- j referendum against the law if It were paased over Mayor Lane's veto but he j stated yesterday that he had not finally . decided wnetner sucn would De the case or not. Pickett, and Chappell, or ganizers, had charge of the work, and were very ably assisted by the drill team of Baker City lodge No. 326. which deserves great praise for the manner in which they carried out the work. A bountiful supper waa served which waa thoroughly enjoyed by all.
