It was reported this noon that the British ship Arctic Stream which has been in port since February 4 waiting for charter has been secured by Bal four, Guthrie 4V Co. and will carry grain to Liverpool. The Arctic Stream, under Captain Dixon, Is one of the speediest sailing vessels In the British merchant marine and has made several records for her self. She came to Portland around the Horn with a cargo of general freight consigned to Meys. Wilson ft Co., and was chartered byl (iWfith, Williams St Co. to carry grain tlurope. While on tne trip from the United Kingdom to Port land the Arctic Stream encountered ter rific seas off the Horn, seas which threatened every hour to swamp the vessel. Captain Dixon estimates that from trough to crest they measured 0 feet and tho nautical expert of th gov ernment bydrographlc office says that the waves were undoubtedly that high. The great storm was caused by a northwest aale which had blown for several days and which was crossed by another from a cross direction, the ves sel being caught where th two came together.
