ARCTIC STREAM CHARTERED.
, , , n J
Vesel Now to Port Will Carry Grain
to Liverpool.
It was reported this noon that the
British ship Arctic Stream which has
been in port since February 4 waiting
for charter has been secured by Bal
four, Guthrie 4V Co. and will carry
grain to Liverpool.
The Arctic Stream, under Captain
Dixon, Is one of the speediest sailing
vessels In the British merchant marine
and has made several records for her
self. She came to Portland around the
Horn with a cargo of general freight
consigned to Meys. Wilson ft Co., and
was chartered byl (iWfith, Williams St
Co. to carry grain tlurope. The firm
naa no grain asa fanner rates went
down from 21s iro"28c. tl wa said
at the offices ofV-tialfour, Guthrie A Co.
that the ship had been chartered, but
the price was not given. The Arctic
Stream at present Is at Columbia No. 1.
According to reports which Captain
Dixon Is preparing for the local hydro
graphic office, the Arctic 8tream has
had some of th most remarkable expe
rience with the use of oil for quieting
the sea that is on record. While on tne
trip from the United Kingdom to Port
land the Arctic Stream encountered ter
rific seas off the Horn, seas which
threatened every hour to swamp the
vessel. Captain Dixon estimates that
from trough to crest they measured 0
feet and tho nautical expert of th gov
ernment bydrographlc office says that
the waves were undoubtedly that high.
The great storm was caused by a
northwest aale which had blown for
several days and which was crossed by
another from a cross direction, the ves
sel being caught where th two came
together. The resulting seas were
frlarhtful. and Captain Dixon say that
' . .. ... .. . .
Dut ror tne use or on wnicn aciea wim
remarkable auccess, his vessel would
never have weathered them. As it was,
he says that no steamer could have
lived through the seas encountered
while rounding the Horn.
A detailed account of the use of th
oil Is being prepared by him ror tne
hydrographic department. When It was
resorted to the ship was1 scudding along
under bare poles at n knots.
