ST.JOMin.Wl mn is d URKY Eesidcnt of Suburb Says the Town Is Wide Open to , Worst Element. ( "It Is time the Veopl of St Johns wore waxing up to conditions In their city, as the conditions really exist," ays J. J. Hurlburt, a resident of ths growing town down the Willamette. "The town la wide open to the worst element on the coast and the authorities have absolutely refused to do anything. "It is no wonder the young men and gins of Bt. Johns are repeatedly haled Before th juvenile courts, giving to Bt. Johns every week the most unenviable reputation of any town Its sise In Ore gon or even on the Paolflo coast. "I stood In a store within 100 feet of the postoffica at Bt. Johns last night when a drunken womsn cam in. There was a lad present hardly 16 years old. The woman used the vilest language I ever heard from a human being. She said Et John was all right for you could buy win much cheaper than in Portland or Astoria, where she said she came rrom. "This morning I went to City Attor ney Greene, Couellmen Leggett and Kins and also evoke 4o Judge Esson. They promised faithfully to see what could be done but If they do not exurt themsolves the state and county author ities will be asked to step In and clean out the whole town from top to bottom. "Borne of th good people of St Johns do not realise how bad conditions are but it seem to m from the record of the past few months that has been brought to light In the courts there should be enough to show them that some (ten must be taken at ones to oorrect the evils or our town wi:i die a natural death. Mr. Hurlburt waa strong In his de nunciation of the conditions and al though several of the councilman and other officials are His friends he blamed them for being lax In enforcing the lawJ He believes that atrong ulterior forces have been brought to bear on the city officials, the most recent example he cite being the discharge of Officer Al len, said to be tho most efficient police officer In the little city. Steam is being warmed In the boilers of the Republican machine and Wednes day next the first public exhibition of its paces will be given. According to the pro gram now on the slate It is the inten tion to adopt a platform upon which Republican candidates must stand to secure the support of the machine, which platform will be openly hostile to the principles of Statement No. 1 and the primary law. This issue is ex pected to raise a rough houne when the convention comes together for tho con sideration of Its business. It is practically certain that but very few of the rank and file of the Repub lican voters will attend the1 precinct "mass meetings," so that as a certainty the delegates will ail be selected by the old-ttme ward heelers and political touts, who will come back into their glory for a short space. The conven tion, therefore, is expected to be under the dominion of these erstwhile leaders, which will make the meeting of the 29th more than ordinarily interesting. Since the correct cost of the St. Johns frry appeared In The Journal Friday the transportation company has absolutely repudiated the figures which were filed with the city council two weeks ago as the "true statement of the items expended on the ferry." P. J. Peterson, president of the com pany, in an interview yesterday states that this itemized list Is simply a price list at which his concern will dispose of the property and Is in no way a true Din or tno cost or construction. Figures already, published show this, but the ferry company prior to this has not acknowledged It. In dOinjf so now Peterson directly contradicts his previous written statement to the coun cil that the figures furnished them were Items 'actually expended on the bont." Although continuing to deny that the figures published In The Journal were correct, he was unable to produce any different ones. Peterson said furthermore that he did not want to sell his property, but was only wining to ao so in response to public demand.
