"It Is time the Veopl of St Johns

"The town la wide open to the worst

have absolutely refused to do anything.
"It is no wonder the young men and

"I stood In a store within 100 feet of

when a drunken womsn cam in. There
was a lad present hardly 16 years old.
The woman used the vilest language I
ever heard from a human being. She
said Et John was all right for you

Portland or Astoria, where she said she

"This morning I went to City Attor

They promised faithfully to see what
could be done but If they do not exurt

Roses, all roses.
They're over fences, lawns and bowers,
noses, an roses;
See how their wondrous beauty glows
Along the streets In blending rows,
W sing of them in verse and prose,
Roses, our roses.
What makes our state th fairest seen?
Roses, our roses.
Of all the states, they make her queen,
Roses, our roses.
Their fame has told Its story far.
There's nothing can their beauty mar.
They're fairer than all others are,
Roaea, our roses.
Through all our gardens fairest grow
Roses, sweet roses.
Their perfume charms our bitterest foe,
Roses, sweet roses.
As from the eastern cltlej, host

Your fame Is known from coast to coast
For roses, queen roses.

In Portland roses larger grow (
Than any place on earth below.
Oh, come and see them at our show

There is expected to be a grand row
at the "mass convention" scheduled for
Saturday next. According to the pro
gram now on the slate It is the inten
tion to adopt a platform upon which
Republican candidates must stand to
secure the support of the machine,
which platform will be openly hostile
to the principles of Statement No. 1
and the primary law. This issue is ex
pected to raise a rough houne when the
convention comes together for tho con
sideration of Its business.
It is practically certain that but very
few of the rank and file of the Repub
lican voters will attend the1 precinct
"mass meetings," so that as a certainty
the delegates will ail be selected by
the old-ttme ward heelers and political
touts, who will come back into their
glory for a short space. The conven
tion, therefore, is expected to be under
the dominion of these erstwhile leaders,
which will make the meeting of the
29th more than ordinarily interesting.

Figures.
Since the correct cost of the St.

P. J. Peterson, president of the com

that this itemized list Is simply a price

of the property and Is in no way a true

Figures already, published show this,

has not acknowledged It. In dOinjf so

Although continuing to deny that the
figures published In The Journal were
correct, he was unable to produce any
different ones.
Peterson said furthermore that he
did not want to sell his property, but
was only wining to ao so in response
to public demand.
