Marquam "Kerry Govf." By D. S. Bernard Daly In the characterisation of Dan O'Hara. with his aualnt and pleasing Irish songs, his Impetuous love making ana me numor ana painoa ui a life wrapped up in political struggles, brought many a hearty response from the audiences which witnessed the in itial production of "Kerry Oow" at the Marquam yeeteraay. "Kerrv Gow" haa been seen in Port land a good many tlmfes. Made famous by Joseph Murphy, who played Its title role so many years people lost count, it has never lacked In absorbing Interest A very successful attempt fo keep to the standard set by Murphy In the let ter's portrayal of Dan Q'Hara is the result of Bernard Daly's efforts. His work was Immensely appreciated yes terday. It was clean cut and worthy the applause elicited. Especially were his songs good. Dan O'Hara never falls to sing at Just the moment when the audience Is In a receptive mood and Ms sweet tenor voice struck a re sponsive chord. Daly apparently Is as much at borne a ' blacksmith snop lorgmg a anoe and nailing It onto a horse's hoof as he la at tha nrison window, rose In hand. singing "The Last Rose of Summer." If Howard Russell is not the heat comedian at the Baker and he prob ably la at least he la the moat prom lalng of the company. Hia excellent work In "Charley' Aunt" yesterday proved that beyond a doubt. Mr. Rua aell haa played the role before in Port land and those who esw both perform ancea aay that he haa Improved greatly. It reveals a good taste that will stand htm in good stead some day. The other members of tne Hajcer com pany give very good support, even n their English accent Isn't of the kind that they would ever be called to pay duty upon. Also there's a new member of the company this week, pretty and very self-possessed and well dressed and possessing a few other desirable qualities. Her name Is Hilda Graham and we wish Hilda well, and a per manent place with the company. SUBURBAN TRACTS , GOOD POTATO FIELDS Thirty sacks of potatoes raised on a lot 40x100 feet In the Cen ter addition, on the Ankeny car line, is the latest crop record for Portland. City lots In the sub urban) district seem to be par ticularly well adapted to the growth of potatoes and vege tables according to the com muters who made the attempt L. Heller, who raised the 30 sacks on one lot, planted lata, he says, or he would have had more. The potatoes are of re markable size and smoothness and many of them have two va rieties of the bulbs growing from the same plant enemies. There are darkles and half breeds and the usual conglomerate col lection of Arkansas characters. ' It. is difficult to follow out the rami fications of the plot of tha play. It would take more than human intelli gence to do that Being modest we shan't attempt It. But there is much good and bad white, red and black bloodshed in the defense of that Ar kansas family. Ben Roberts is success ful as Colonel John Howard, the south erner; Dorothy Grey Is the half-breed, and Don McMillan is good aa Mcintosh Todd, the tragedian out of a Job. The play pleased large bouses at the Em pire both yesterday afternoon and eve ning. Star "Chinatown Charley." "Chinatown Charley" Is at the Star this week. Now people don't want to read about "Chinatown Charley." Read ing Is a mere passive form of taking tne world in nomeopatmc aosea it doesn't at all suit the people who want to see Charley; All that we can do is to advise them to go and live through I three hours of tense excitement. Those (who went down on Second street last I week and were disappoints at the dirty I tameness of the oriental colony, should j hurry right away and secure . tickets for the Star. They will not be disap pointed ' there. Everything that the moat diseased Imagination could con ceive of will be exposed to their gase.
