Of the leaser comedians Julian Keea

The mualc of "HaDDVland ' Is aa
graceful as anything Mr. DeKoven has
written. Much of it Is dreamy, rhyth
mic atuff, reminiscent of the gem of
that compoaer'a work "Popples" and
the chorus with the bells is particularly
effective. The book, by Frederick Ban-
ken, la original, and entertaining,

Bernard Daly In the characterisation
of Dan O'Hara. with his aualnt and
pleasing Irish songs, his Impetuous love
making ana me numor ana painoa ui a
life wrapped up in political struggles,
brought many a hearty response from
the audiences which witnessed the in
itial production of "Kerry Oow" at the
Marquam yeeteraay.
"Kerrv Gow" haa been seen in Port
land a good many tlmfes. Made famous
by Joseph Murphy, who played Its title
role so many years people lost count, it
has never lacked In absorbing Interest
A very successful attempt fo keep to
the standard set by Murphy In the let
ter's portrayal of Dan Q'Hara is the
result of Bernard Daly's efforts. His
work was Immensely appreciated yes
terday. It was clean cut and worthy
the applause elicited. Especially were
his songs good. Dan O'Hara never
falls to sing at Just the moment when
the audience Is In a receptive mood and
Ms sweet tenor voice struck a re
sponsive chord.
Daly apparently Is as much at borne

and nailing It onto a horse's hoof as he

continue to draw good housea.

If Howard Russell is not the heat
comedian at the Baker and he prob
ably la at least he la the moat prom
lalng of the company. Hia excellent
work In "Charley' Aunt" yesterday
proved that beyond a doubt. Mr. Rua
aell haa played the role before in Port
land and those who esw both perform
ancea aay that he haa Improved greatly.
He waa certainly very good In the fam
ous farce role at the opening perform
ance. There is a great opportunity to
overdo the thing in Charley'a Aunt.

fun and taking up with vulgarity are
limitless. But Mr. RuBsell doesn't over
step the mark. It reveals a good taste
that will stand htm in good stead some
day.
The other members of tne Hajcer com
pany give very good support, even n
their English accent Isn't of the kind
that they would ever be called to pay
duty upon. Also there's a new member
of the company this week, pretty and
very self-possessed and well dressed
and possessing a few other desirable
qualities. Her name Is Hilda Graham
and we wish Hilda well, and a per
manent place with the company. She

the performance was Louise Kent's new
blue frock very stunning, we assure
you, and most becoming to miss Kent.
We wish to honor both tho original
mind that conceived it and the young
woman who had the good sense to wear
it. The women at the matinee perform
ance spent fully half an hour wonder
ing how It was made and if that was
really the advanced style for early
spring wear. Miss Kent gives her word
that it Is.
Mr. Dills has done his work well in
the direction of stage setting the three
acts are exceptionally well staged even
for him. The performance went vert
well and the hilafUft was unrestrained.
Empire "As 1pld in the Hills."
"As Told in the Hills" has stood ithe
test of time and promises to be as abod
a drawing card at the Empire this wepk
as It ever was. It Is a melodrama tell
ing about the attack on an Arkansas

Twentyfour clerka have recently been
promoted and when all promotions are
completed the annual Increase In the
payroll of these men will aggregate
18,000. In addition three additional
helpers have been aaaljrned to the run.
All promotlona are made on merit and
are preceded by a hard courae of atudy

The line, which has become more Im
portant than any other line running Into
Portland .within the last few daya, waa
organised In lit with eight crewa of
two men each. Now there are If
through crewa with a total of 42 men on
the Una. The Portland district la under
F. K. Whitney, who Is chief clerk. The

GOOD POTATO FIELDS
Thirty sacks of potatoes raised
on a lot 40x100 feet In the Cen
ter addition, on the Ankeny car
line, is the latest crop record for
Portland. City lots In the sub
urban) district seem to be par
ticularly well adapted to the
growth of potatoes and vege
tables according to the com
muters who made the attempt

"Chinatown Charley" Is at the Star
this week. Now people don't want to
read about "Chinatown Charley." Read

to see Charley; All that we can do is
to advise them to go and live through

Asset Currency
The people of Portland, Oregon,
X "the first in the country to present
financial. flurry, a the Fortland leiegram explains, ihe banks ot
that city issued $1,400,000-in asset currency maturing on the first of
this month. The last of it waa redeemed three days before that date.
This is.a allowing of which the Portland business men have reason fo
be proud. It is all. the better because at one time the situation in
the northern city threatened to become especially acute.
But if Portland haa' cause for pride in being the first to retire ita
asset currency, how much moe aatisfaction should there be in citiea
that are on so sound a basis that they could weather the storm with-
I out resort to clearing-house certificaHei? San Diego was by itself in
that class on the Pacific coast, no other city of like size and volume of
