Charles Hurlas. arraigned before Juatlce William Knight for drunkenness and disorderly eonduct on Southern Pacific passenger train No. 17, was punished with a fine. Hurlas had been to Oregon City and imbibed very freely. He refuaed to pay hla fare or get off the train, and be came abusive. The conductor called City Marshal Dick and Hurlas was dragged from the train. Hurlas ia said to have offered the conductor an old ticket which had expired. A suit In volving a. mortgage of 120,000 on the Columbia hotel, a three story structure located near the ferry In Vancouver, has been decided by the supreme court in favor of L. M. Hidden and wife, owners of the hotel. The hotel wa mortgaged by the Hid den in 189S to the German Savings A Loan society of San Francisco for $10, 000 with Interest at T per 'cent. In 1891 the Hlddena executed a chat tel mortgage on the hotel furniture for 12,717 to secure a payment or interest in arreara. In 1902 they paid the loan society 13,447 In ful of all Interest to that dato and secured ah agreement for a reduction to 6 per cent Thereafter the Interest was paid promptly, and la June 1908, $10,000 was paid on the rrlnclpaL In tbe following October, 10,111 waa tendered as final payment on the mortgage and rejected by the company. Suit waa brought to compel a re lease of the mortgage. The loan society claimed the contract for the reduction of interest was void because there was no consideration; that the plaintiffs had failed to nay the insurance on the fur niture and that the tender waa by draft Instead of gold coin.
