"I am also Informed that the owners of this property can provide a vent upon their own property without in fringing upon the aldewalk, If they will make the necessary expenditure to do ao, and I can see no reason why they snouia not pursue mat course. "Thla property Is valuable, and the rentals which are asked for the use of It are, I presume, in full value for such use, and it should not be forgot ten that ita rental value la due to the fact that It occupies its position upon the corner of streets much traveled by the public, and it seems to ma that the owners or the property should be con tent with the use of their own hold ings without seeking for those the right to the use of which belongs to the public. "This particular case Is not so fla grant as are some others which have been granted In the pant, yet the grant sought for la in direct conflict with the rights and the interests of this community, as It forms an elevated ob struction In the sidewalk and deserves no consideration at your hands as the agents of the people. "In vetoing this ordinance, I will say frankly that I have but scant hope that the rights of the people of this city to the full use of their streets will have much weight when pitted attalnst those of the Individual, yet at all times a firotest against such a line of procedure s due, and I make It that It may be of record In the day when such matters will not be so lightly considered."
