employed In the shops of the O. R. & N.

County Clerk Fields has filed his re
port for the month of January, which
shows receipts of 11. 912. 20 In the cir
cuit court department. $1,165.60 In the
county court department and $2,433.30
In the recording department, a total of
lb. 601. The expenses for supplies
amounted to $l,2ti8 89 and for salaries
to $3,943.74, a total Of $4,213.13. The
profit to the county was $1,288.87, as
against $1,174.67 In January, 1907. in
1906 In the same month the profit waa
12.021.47, and In 1902, under the old
system, the net expense to the county
was Jl, 395.28.
R J. Daly reports the sale of a E0 by
100-foot lot on Thirteenth street, near
Main, to out-of-town purchaser for
$7.fi00. The purchaser will tear out the
old building now on the property and
build a modern apartment house. Work
to bee In within a short time. Beno
and Ballis and E. J. Daly have leased
for five years the old Detroit hotel at
the corner of Twenty-seventh and
Thurman streets to James Sutherland,
who will remodel the structure into a
modern apartment house.

ings without seeking for those the right
to the use of which belongs to the
public.
"This particular case Is not so fla
grant as are some others which have
been granted In the pant, yet the grant
sought for la in direct conflict with
the rights and the interests of this
community, as It forms an elevated ob
struction In the sidewalk and deserves
no consideration at your hands as the
agents of the people.
"In vetoing this ordinance, I will say
frankly that I have but scant hope that
the rights of the people of this city to
the full use of their streets will have
much weight when pitted attalnst those
of the Individual, yet at all times a
firotest against such a line of procedure
s due, and I make It that It may be
of record In the day when such matters
will not be so lightly considered."

Combined efforts of the police and her
parents have proved quite unavailing to
solve the mystery of the unaccountable
disappearance of Pearl Anderson, who
left her home, 487 uavis street, a wee
ago last Friday, and has not been heard
from since. All efforts to locate her
have failed, as there are"absolutely no
Qlues, and the police have no tneories
to work on. The girl Is only 16, but

older, as she Is tall and well developed.
When last seen, she wore a black skirt,
