Bailey & Company ' 424-426 3 Washington St -wie 09 TT 1 9 I . & Benson of ths . Benson Logging company has gone to Ban' Francisco to charter two or more steam schooners to -carry lumber from Preaoott on the lower Columbia to the company's yardi in . Bon Diego. The vessels will be en- gaged for a period of . at least six montha. . Mr. Benson has arranged with the Beaver Lumber company at Prescott to cut from 4.000.000 to -10,000.000 feet of logs from his camp at uiatskanie during the next five months and the lumber will be shipped to California on ' vessels for which Mr. Benson is now negotiating. ' It Is supposed that the Portland log ger will have little trouble getting cheap boats since there is a big fleet of steam scnooners - tiea up at Ban Francisco because of the poor demand for carriers. - . The vessels made big profits all last spring and summer when lumber shipments south were phenomenal but gradually the business has dwindled down until there Is now hardly enough to keep boats owned by some or , tne .individual mills in com mission. By furnishing his own logs, Mr. Ben son oeiieves ne can mane money on lum ber at prloee that would bar others from competition. He will also resumo shipping logs In rafts at Ban Diego In the spring. - Last year he sent several rafts to Ban Dieso to be cut Into lum ber at ths mill he installed there early in tne spring. He is also intending to establish a larre sawmill near Clata- kanle within a year's time. FOOD SPOILED BY SEAS. Crew of Schooner Queen Get Assist ance in $kk of Time. (United Pren Lad Wire.
