' Captain Simon, master of the Ger man bark Relnbek, relates a strange ex- perlence In Santa Rosalia, lower Cali fornia, and to which he attrioutes tne tact that vessels coming from that port - have bad more or less cases of typhoid fever on board. One of the crew-of the Relnbek ex pired from the disease shortly after reaching Astoria and the chief officer has been 'out of the ship's hospital only a few days.- At one time half the crew were In the sick ward, demanding the rare of the men who also bad to : sail 1 the vessel, which made a record break ing run up the coast. Jack King, who confessed to robbing a room in a lodging-house at 204 Vi Fourth ' street, and Is regarded aa the leader of a small gang of youthful hold-up men, was sentenced to serve six years In the penitentiary by Judge Cleland yesterday. He denied that he had engaged in more than one robbery, but teatlmony was Introduced connect ing him with having held .up a man and woman on the street. Fred Cobb, who has been traveling In company With King, but is much young er, also pleaded guilty. He waa more frank than King, confessing to five or nix affaire in which he was enaaged. Because of this and of his youth he r was dealt with more leniently, being sentenced to serve three years. An ef fort had been made to secure a parole for 'him, but Judge Cleland said this could not be granted. Had Cobb been prosecuted on all the matters to which he confessed he might have been sent to prison lor the rest or ms lire. An epi demic of tonsllltls has visited Both the School for Deaf and Blind, at Van couver, and the State Training school at Chehalls. according to the reports of the superintendents or ' tnese insiiiu tlnna received bv tha state board of con trol yesterday. At the Vancouver school there were 23. cases among the children and four among the officers and t at tendants. Three of these developed into pleurisy. There were nodeaths so rar. At the training school a large number were stricken, the greater percentage being a-lrla. One boy who refused to allow the doctor to use the knife died during his sleep from strangulation. The authorities are-nov afraid of the grippe, which is prevalent In the com munity around the school. The report, from the training school shows 241 Inmates on December 21. with an average for dally attendance of 239 The cost cf maintenance for the month was $4,210. At the Vancouver institution, 135 were lnmstes on .December 31, with a daily average attendance for the month of 130. The cost of maintenance was tA.700.49. The. new dormitory. Mead hall. The recent edicts from the throne agalnat the agitation have not had a conclusive effect, but they have Drought about a, change for the better in tne tone of the comment appearing in the native press. Certain members of the rovernment are doubtful of the ultimata outcome of the measures adopted by the throne; they resent some or tnem, ana they are not convinced of the sincerity of the government, in extending the repressive measures to the provinces. For II hours yes terday Andrew Chrlstofferson, a saloon proprietor, faced death while physicians worked in desperation to save his life Early In the morning an artery far back In his nostrils became ruptured and began bleeding. Its position made it extremely airacuit to reach It and Chrlstofferson rapidly weakened until it seemed nis life could not be ssved. Finally the surgeons reached the diffi culty and the bleeding- was stopped. The physicians announce he will live unless the hemorrhuge begins again. Olympla Train Changes.
