, - Strange Tale. . .
' Captain Simon, master of the Ger
man bark Relnbek, relates a strange ex-
perlence In Santa Rosalia, lower Cali
fornia, and to which he attrioutes tne
tact that vessels coming from that port
- have bad more or less cases of typhoid
fever on board.
One of the crew-of the Relnbek ex
pired from the disease shortly after
reaching Astoria and the chief officer
has been 'out of the ship's hospital only
a few days.- At one time half the crew
were In the sick ward, demanding the
rare of the men who also bad to : sail
1 the vessel, which made a record break
ing run up the coast.
"A tew
days before leaving Santa
Rnulla for thla nort a tremendous lot
Of flies swsrmed in upon the harbor of
Banta Reaalla," said the captain, "and
. they must have brought the typhoid
?erms, because during the next three or
our days every ship in the harbAr was
- afflicted with fever. Klles came by the
a millions from the interior of the penin
sula and made for the ships. Ther
was a large fleet of windjammers in
the harbor snd not one escaped the
files and the accompanying disease.
"The Insect came with the night
breeze and disappeared as quickly. Evi
dently they were migrating towards the
equator, although it certainly was not
, enough for them in Santa Rosalia.'
' . Iisst summer a Norwegian skipper rs
poVted having been attacked off the
- Oalapagoes Islands of the equator by
i swarms of files so dense that they b
i soured the sun but their visit was not
- followed by disease among the" crew.

The recent edicts from the throne
agalnat the agitation have not had a
conclusive effect, but they have Drought
about a, change for the better in tne
tone of the comment appearing in the
native press. Certain members of the
rovernment are doubtful of the ultimata
outcome of the measures adopted by the
throne; they resent some or tnem, ana
they are not convinced of the sincerity
of the government, in extending the

"NOTHING Tfl SAY"
(Continued from Page One.)
New York, Jan. 14. A stage kiss that
lasts 25 seconds by the watch, almost
half a minute. Is tbe latest novelty to
thrill New Yorkers. It Is called the
"Louise kiss" and was Imported from
France by Mary Garden and Charles
Dalmores.
The kiss occurs for the first time In
the opening of- act III of "Louise."
Dalmores Is seated "down stage" read
in ar. Enter Miss Garden. She steals
upon the unsuspecting tenor and before
ne Knows it me lucay man is incasea
In a dreamv half nelson. Down goes
the book (what chance has . literature,
anyhow?) and the half nelson is coun
tered by an ardent strangle hold.
Then the kiss begins. There is noth
ing Diatonic, nothing fraternal, nothing
perfunctory about it. The audience be
gins to crow Interested. Pulses trained
to sedate, onerattc tempo get clear out
or tlmo and scamper on at a rurious,
erratic . pace, and fussy young" girls
glance speculatively at their staring es
corts. The matrons eve their interested
husbands with an unspoken rebuke.
"Home was never like tnis," mur
murs one railbird sadly.
At the end of 25 1-5 seconds the
stage lips part and the agony of the
audience is over till the next time.
