The movements from San Francises via Panama to the eastern ports were sent to Tampa, Philadelphia, New York, New Haven ; end Boston, and Include wines, pig lead, quicksilver, hides and skins, and miscellaneous merchandise. The shipments from Hawaii, which form the bulk of the merchandise pass ing eastward from' ports of the United States via the Tehuantepec route, are chiefly raw sugar. The vessels which carry the sugar- make a triangular route, passing during the sugar season direct from Hawaii to, the western terminus of the railway, and after dis charging their cargo pass thence north wardiy. along .tns western coast or tne United 8tates t San Francisco and in some cases as far north as the Puget sound - ports . and thence to Hawaii, where they load again direct for th Tehuantepee port during -the sugar sea son, and at other times for San Fran cisco, and thence along the coast to the, Aenuaniepeo port, . -;, , The distance which sugar from Hawaii now travels In reaching New York. via the Tehuantepee route is 6,808 miles, against 12,269 miles via the former all-water route, around Cape Horn, . j ' ' 'r,K. From New York to Port Townsend direct the distance is S.199 miles; via Tehuantepec. 6,194 miles; via Panama. 5,080, and via Ma gellan straits, 15,848 miles. - From New York to Honolulu direct via San.
