The shipments via Panama from New
York to the west coast ports of the
Enlted States were distributed to San
lego, Santa . Barbara, Los Angeles,

attle and Spokane,- and those, to for
eign countries by this route included
Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia,
Panama, Costa Bica, Honduras, Nicer,
a gua, Guatemala. Mexico and the Brit
ish Columbia ports of. Canada. These
include practically all 'classes of mer
chandise, but more especially meats,
flour, cotton goods, mineral oil, mining
machinery,, manufactures of iron and
steel and miscellaneous manufactures.
. The movements from San Francises
via Panama to the eastern ports were
sent to Tampa, Philadelphia, New York,
New Haven ; end Boston, and Include
wines, pig lead, quicksilver, hides and
skins, and miscellaneous merchandise.
The shipments from Hawaii, which
form the bulk of the merchandise pass
ing eastward from' ports of the United
States via the Tehuantepec route, are
chiefly raw sugar. The vessels which
carry the sugar- make a triangular
route, passing during the sugar season
direct from Hawaii to, the western
terminus of the railway, and after dis
charging their cargo pass thence north
wardiy. along .tns western coast or tne

some cases as far north as the Puget
sound - ports . and thence to Hawaii,
where they load again direct for th

son, and at other times for San Fran

Hawaii now travels In reaching New
York. via the Tehuantepee route is 6,808
miles, against 12,269 miles via the
former all-water route, around Cape

San Francisco are, direct by land, 8,191
miles; via Tehuantepec, 4,415 miles; via
Panama, 5,305 miles, and via Magellan
straits. 13,089 miles. From New York
to Port Townsend direct the distance
is S.199 miles; via Tehuantepec. 6,194
miles; via Panama. 5,080, and via Ma
gellan straits, 15,848 miles. - From New
York to Honolulu direct via San. Fran
cisco the distance is 5,288 miles; via
Port Townsend 5,669 miles; via- Te
huantepec, 6.805 miles; via Panama,
5,585 miles, and ;via Magellan straits,
