Three University of Oregon studouta, Bolton Hatnble, '01; Cecil Lyons, .'OS; and Cornelius, Beebe, '08; are prepar ing to take the examination for ' the Rhodes' scholarship, which will bo held January zi ana zz. ' - According to the terms of the De quest, the holder of the scholarship Is allowed $1,600 a year for three years at the University of Oxford,' England. Beside scholaatlo attainments, the ac tivity of the candidate in All phasos of college life, as sports, debate, student body affairs, etc., are to be taken into ntiflldAra.tlon. . He won nearly all of these decisively. Dixon's fame spread beyond New England and he waa taken up by Tom O'Rourke, one of the greatest . managers that - ever lived, O'Rourke secured the McCarthy tight for his protege. McCarthy went up to Boston to meet the "Chocolate Drop" In a finish fight, the contest taking place February 7, 1890. Dixon fpught through 70 long, hard rounds with McCarthy.
