featherweight champion of the world,
and. considered to be the greatest, little
fighter that ever donned gloves, died
yesterday in Bellevue hospital, a victim
of acute alcoholism. As soon as Dixon's
death became known hundreds of , his
former friends flocked to the Longacre
Athletio club. Where the remains were
moved, to get a last look at the fallen

Rhodes' scholarship, which will bo held

quest, the holder of the scholarship Is
allowed $1,600 a year for three years
at the University of Oxford,' England.
Beside scholaatlo attainments, the ac
tivity of the candidate in All phasos of
college life, as sports, debate, student

kept close to New England, most of his
fights being with second-raters. He won
nearly all of these decisively. Dixon's
fame spread beyond New England and
he waa taken up by Tom O'Rourke, one

lived, O'Rourke secured the McCarthy
tight for his protege.
McCarthy went up to Boston to meet
the "Chocolate Drop" In a finish fight,
the contest taking place February 7,
1890. Dixon fpught through 70 long,
hard rounds with McCarthy. It waa
finally called a draw by the referee, who

Round 4 Kerby lands two blows on
face, and laugha. Hamlin leads a heavy
right on Kerby over the heart. Kerby
goe down heavily and Is taken from
the ring fighting like a tiger. Oong.

After that he seemed to lack the
stamina, and although he fought a score
of good men and toured England he
never regained his old-time form. Young
