PILOTS STEER CRAFT WITHOUT DIFFICULTY British Ship Walden Abbey Com pletes Tedious Voyage From New- castle, England, With Cargo of General Merchandise. After having waited In vain for eev eral hours for a tug to come out and tow him In, Pilot Anderson yesterday alied the British ship Walden Abbey into the bay off Astoria. The entrance to the river was rough and a tremen dous comber boarded the vessel and nearly swept the captain and two sail ors overboard. The steering gear was slightly damaged. The Walden Abbey wns 216 days out from Newcastle, Kngland, with Keneral cargo consigned to liulfour, Guthrie & Co.. and her skipper, Captain Campbell, was anxious to gel In, and he wns therefore pleased when Pilot Anderson suggested to wait no longer for th tug but sail in. The wind was fairly favorable and the big windjammer made the run about as quickly as had Bhe been dragging in the wake of one of the tugs. Much Indignation is being expressed in shipping circles because of vessels having to sail in when two tugs are supposed to be at the mouth of the river for the purpose of towing them. The Walden Abbey is the second large! winajammer to bhij in during tne past few days because the tug failed to come out and it is declared that an explanation from the tug men Should V forthcoming. They failed to go after the British bark Castor and as a result It is feared that she has foundered with all on board. If such turns out to be the caso then drastic measures will in all prob ability be taken to have the service at the mouth of the river renovated at once, since the missing vessel has been close enough to the bar upon several occasions to have been entitled to at tention from the tug men. Coasting schooners quite often sail in 'because their skippers dislike waiting outside for the fug which might or might not show up. a The sailing of these large windjam mers In over the baroes to show the channel to be In good condition. HEAVY STORM AGAIN. off the bar. At North Head the wind gained a velocity of 64 miles an hour and It is not known here how hard It blew at Tatoosh because the wire to the Island went down during the early part of the evening. The British bark Castor Is still mis sing, but now that the wind has veered around to the north, she should show up soon If the recent gales drove tier far from the mouth of the river. Up till this time most of the gnles have come from the southeast and with them It would have been slow work to bring her bark to the river. Captain Donald Campbell, overlooker for the line of which the Cantor be longs, is still hopeful that the bark will put In an appearance In good shape and lie declines to ask that a govern ment vessel be sent in search for her. He contends the vessel will come In all right If afloat. Numantla, .Feb. 16 NOTICE TO MAIUXERS. Blow Comes From North and Shonld Aid Bark Castor. Wash ington Is now at the high tide of the Christmas season, and there will be little doing In the way of official business during the coming week. Some of the members of congress are leaving the capital to spend the holidays at their homes, but by fsr the larger majority will remain In the city. The proportion remain ing here is much larger than In former years, a fact which la probably due In no inconsiderable measure to the cutting off of free railroad passes. It will be a merry Christmas at the White House, where the president and Mrs. Roosevelt will be surrounded by all their family. There will be Interest ing celebrations also at the dif ferent embassies and legations, especially those where there are children. The officers and bluejackets of the great American battleship fleet now on Its way to the Pa cific will spend Christmas at Trinidad. The vessels are due to reach the Island oa the day before Christmas, and will re main there four or five days. Christmas week will be marked by the usual large number of teachers' conventions to be held throughout the country. The largest and most Important of these gatherings will be that of the Southern Educational associ ation to be held In Lexington, Kentucky. The annual show of the Im porters' Automobile Salon, given over to motor cars of foreign manufacture, will open Saturday In Madison Square gardn, New York, and continue through the following wook. l u vn rriii Di i a GREEKS IN SCHOOL AT PENDLETON FACES CHARGES OF STEALING HORSES (Special Plapstcb to Th Journal.)
