The senate this morning, after much discussion, unanimously passed the tax delinquency bill, extending the tlne for the payment of the first Installmit of state ami county .taxes. tiO days to Janu ary i. The measure was Immediately transmitted to the assembly and will doubtless go to the governor this even ing. Senator Anderson introduced a con cuirent resolution' opposing Leavltt's proposition for a bank Investigating commission of six arid a contingent ex pense fund of 15.' no. Anderson only wants two Investigators and S'J.OUO cx- fiense money. Curtln, Carter and Anthony signed the minority report declaring the whole thing un constitutional, so nothing is likely to be done In that quarter. It now looks like an adjournment till tomorrow. Jacob HHt, the employ at the county poor farm accused of assault while armed with a dangerous weapon, was given a hearing In the Justice court this morning. The defendant waived examination and was bound, oyer to the circuit court under $500 ball by Jus tice Reld. In default of ball )Hllt was taken back to the county Jail. O- Last Thursday a commotion In on of the rooms at the cqunty hospital at tracted the atentlon of the attendants. On going to the room. Jack V. Fitzger ald, an aged Inmate of the hospital, was fnnnd nlmnut senseless from tne effects of a merciless beating. His back and shoulders were black and blue and bleeding from the wounds. Fitzgerald accused HUt, and the latter was ar rested and taken to the city Jail. Ills bail was Ixcd at 11,000. At the Jail Hilt admitted beating the old man with his cane and a broom- handle, but said the Inmate needed the punishment, as he was overbearing and refused to nave nis room cuanca. This morning Hilt's ball wbb reduced from 11,000 to 500. BLUEJACKET DESERTER GIVES HIMSELF TIP Conscience stricken over deserting from the navy and living in constant fear ef arrest, P. J. Donovan surren dered! himself at police headquarters Inst night and was locked up pending the arrival of a United States naval of ficer. According to Donovan's story he deserted from the United States ship maopenaer.ee at ware isiana, Califor nia, three years ago last September and Is now desirous of receiving punishment for his crime. The case is regarded as one of the most remarkable ever coming to the attention of the authorities. G ADAMS People at Ifathdrum Believe 3Ian Accused of Murder of Tyler Will Be Freed. (United Press Lesttd Wire.) Rathdrum, Ida,, Nov. SI. Testimony given by Harvey Brown at the former trial was read by the defense In th Stjv Adarrs case this morning. Brown was recently assassinated at Baker City, Oregon, and It was charged that the Western Federation was responsible for the crime. The testimony of Brown was most important for the defense. It shows the manner in which Steve Adams was ar rested and hurried off to the' peniten tiary. The defense will probably cloe be fore adjournment tonight. Then the state will require about a day for re buttal. Clirence Darrow will make the prin cipal argument for the defense, while Knight and Hawley will divide the honors for the state. It is the opinion here that Adams will he acquitted. If so an officer from Colorado, who is en route here will Immediately arrest Adams on . the charge of the murder of Arthur Collins. Dep uty Sheriff Ward arrested Mis Laura William lost night on a warrant is sued by the district attorney, charging murder in connection with the death of a five months old mulatto child thrown from the Panta Fe flyer Monday even ing. Mrs. Catherine Kelly, a nurse, In formed Officer Ward that the Williams girl, .who Is only 19, had been staying with her for some weeks, receiving money tnrougn unknown source. Mon day afternoon the Williams girl left and to a query as to why she did not take tne inrant s ciotning, replied that she would not need the clothe any more. Trainmen on the flyer recoKnlsed the woman by description. She had a bun dle wrapepd In a brown shawl, which they knew was a child, though not see ing its features. Near Cucamonga the woman entered the men's toilet, reap pearing without the bundle. A pair of Infant's shoes left on the seat also disappeared later. The body of the Infant waa positive ly Identified by Nurse Kelly. She could Kive no other Information, but stated that the Williams girl Impressed her as acting mysteriously since they met and would tell nothing concerning her past or ine parentage or tne mianc.
