N ' - I'' ' .' ' iv rE popular and prttr marcel wava j aald to b bad for the hair. Numerous complaint hava been mada of Injury and van of permanent harm dona to tha hair by conftant uaa of thla malbod. In every caae, thla ha bean traoad back to tha uae of heat, the eame cauae which leada to fallln hair with Uiers of curllnj lroni. There are many waya to marcel the hair with out the uie of Are. Amonj theae are the kid. ribbon or other artlflolal curler, the employ ment of curllnr lotions, and tha new hairpin and etrlng metboda. Wa will treat of these laat modes first The hairpin curling la illustrated In one of the photograph accompany ing this article. The hair la first parted In the mid dle, and divided Into email stranda. For each of these a thin wire hair pin Is used. Pass the atrand through the bend of the hairpin, and then twist It down lta length, platting It aa It were, first with one aide and then with the other. When all the hair has been wound upon It that the pin will hold, twlat lta enda upward to hold the atrand secure, and proceed to tbi next Tha atring and paper method la al most aa almpla. BRAIDING WITH STRING A long atring Is tied tightly to a email roll of paper, which la then held closely against the scalp. The hair has, as before, been divided Into atrands. Each atrand Is then separated Into three parts and Is plaited, the pleoe of string In each case being plaited with one of the sections. When braided to the end, the atring is drawn upward, pulling the hair wlti It, and Is tied again around the paper. Two or three hours will accomplish the tnarcellng by either at these meth ods, though the effect la better If the hairpins or strings are left on all night Even tight braiding In Innumerable "Topsy" plaits will wave the hair over night This, however, takes a good deal of time and patience. A better way for the busy woman la to use the regular kid or ribbon curlers, or one of tha many patent wooden or ir.etal ones. To setfure a large, loose wave, aim ply tie a wide ribbon tightly about the hair near the top of the head before retiring. In the morning there will be one deep wave about the middle of the pompadour and another further up on th e back hair. There are aeveral good curling prepa rations. Qulnceseed, for instance, makes an excellent one, and Is of es pecial value to those whose hair la af fected by the weather. It Is prepared by mixing a tablespoonful of bruised qulnceseed with a pint of hot water. The watar la poured over the aeeda and the whole allowed to otand for aev eral hours. CUBilNq SOLUTIONS The resultant mucilage may then be thinned with a few drops of essence of violet The hair la moistened with the fluid before curling1. A solution to keep the hair curled la made aa follows : Oum arablo Good, moist sugar, 1 ounce IX niiiM ......... 7S - Pur hot watar Aloohol Blchlorld of mercury , Sal ammoniac................ Pint I fluid ounce grains I grains The last two should be dissolved In the aloohol before admixture. Lastly, add nough water to roak th Whole measure . on pint Ferfum witn eoiogn or laven der. Moisten th hair with the fluid befor putting It in th paper or ourlra Thla Is too strong a solution to be applied repeatedly, aa it would sural . r - v . i MMMnmaM. '4 'sAi have a destructive effect on the hair follicles. Therefore, It should not be too t frequently used, and not at too hort an Interval. An occasional use, however, la practically harmless. A curler which will marcel the hair without the use of any other means la made with the following Ingredients: Potassium earbonat J0 grain Ammonia water 1 fluid dram Alcohol 12 fluid drams RoMwatar. enough to make it fluid ounce In using thla preparation, moisten the hair with it, adjust It loosely and It will curl upon drying. A child' hair may be trained to wave naturally by constantly brushing it In a backward direction. After childhood, however, thla la Ineffectual, except where the hair falls out after a fever. Sometimes the beauty of a carefully waved coiffure is spoiled by the little "scolding locks" that grow around the top of the neck and over the ears. Touching these with the qulnceseed curler, or with a little sugar water, . will transform them Into dainty and attractive curls. It may thus be seen that there are "a thousand and one" ways of waving and tnarcellng the hair without heat Vhlle thla la so, It la hard to under stand why any woman should prefer the use of Irons, which break the hair and dry It so that Its growth Is re tarded. It Is In every way better to wave the hair by one of theae natural and aim pie methods, and there can be no doubt that the effect is just as attractive. If not mora so, than when the hair Is tnaroeled In the usual manner. L- - - IfeTTrJ ':f4-NA4l THE OREGON SUNDAY 5 A: flfl ' 11 to 6v lkwG airVitaoijt Amt '5 i.
