Or., Ken. XI. That the Burn Tfiure food, . correct . welg-ht bill. , now pending- before the senate, la not copy of tin national pure food law aa la com monly supposed.' waa contended by a delegation . of Portland Jobbers before the senate committee on horticulture and the Multnomah delegation vester- arlarnnon. It mmm argued by J. w. Teal, attorney for the jobbers, that .several sections of the national pure fond law are omitted from the Burns' bill, and that tbe Burns' bill contains several sections and clauses not found In the national law. . In eponse to a question by Attorney Teal, Burns stated that retailers are exempted from the requirement that the correct weight of each packer must be stamped on It.. It was eraued that this was not the case, and that la real ty every retailer, Jobber, and farmer in tUeetate Is required to stump on every article sold the true weight. It waa asserted that this would require that very paper or sack of groceries,, every rackaic of meat wrapped .in paper by a retail butcher, and every article aold by any person In sny sort of container be stamped with the correct net weight sxt the merchandise contained. "It waa probably Intended to cover only package goods, but it covers all goods sold In bulk aa well." said TeaL "It is the general understanding of the :' .:iiy.:u:. 1 ' : - After Inventory Sale ., The "price "are cut to '-1 the quick. . TheBurns bill Is silent as to drugs." "The Portland Jobbers appeared be fore the committee to protfit against the paaaage of the Burns' bill. They stated that many kinds of foods, euoh aa sugar, salt, evaporated fruit, and oth er things would lose weight la shipment and whn stored In dry warehouses, and that It would be unfair to charge the Jobbers with giving short weights when loaa of weight had been caused by such unavoidable conditions. . After appearing before the senate aommlttee In the afternoon the Jobbers appeared before, the Multnomah" delega tion last night and aaked the members to vote against the bill when It comes up for final paaaage.
