This condition Is said to be due to wagons passing over freshly graded streets In the vicinity onto Failing, where the mud from their wheels was deposited. It waa reported goon time ago that the street railway would soon reduce the fare from 10 cents to 5 cents, but so far nothing haa coma of It. Mayor Shtndler of Mil waukee took up the question with the railway management but with no satla factory result. Real estate dealera and residents gen erally of Mflwaukls say that the growth of that section Is seriously handicapped with a 10-cent fare to the city. They point to the fact that St. Johns and Arleta, both out or tne city limits ana much farther from the city than M11- waukle. have '6-eent fares. The nat ural result Is that Intending purchasers of suburban homes seek the district having the cbeapeat car fare to the olty. The further claim Is made that while Milwaukle la not In Multnomah coun ty Still It Is as muoh or more of a suburb of Portland than St Johns or the Mount Scott towns and Is entitled to th same treatment at the hands of the street railway company. 3. H. Raid, the well-known fruit grower of Milwaukle, propoaea to dem onstrate that th Willamette valley will grow ss fins applss and pears as any other part of Oregon. Hi plan la to elect three ten-acre tracts and plant well-known varieties of apples and pears In them. The trees are to be well ; cultivated and sprayed wnen necessary. Two of these tracts are to be in Clack amas county and one In Columbia coun ty, aad all three near a public high way, so that ths work don can be seen. Mr. Raid says that such practical demonstration is necessary to show what can be done In apple and pear cultivation, a most farmer will not believe what they cannot aa. "There wlU soon be a greater de mand than aver," said Mr. Raid, "for Oregon apples and pears, snd we must be prepared to supply this demand." The annual meeting of th Bast Bid Improvement association will be held this eemng. Report for th year will be submitted and officers for tbs en suing year are to be elected.
