JAP AKESr WIWSPAPEB XAK M COKES PtATWHIGHT. (SpecUl riptcb to The Journal.) San Francisco, Feb. 13. The action of tbe state board of trade In refusing to ' endorse the San Francisco world' fair ' project for 113 seems to have met with the approbation of most people here. Arthur Briggs of the board has an- nounced that California should not place any obstacles In the way of Ore gon making a complete success of the Lewis and Clark exposition and In this he Is supported by nearly all of the ' business men . of the state. Since the decision of the committee of the board that California must help make the Lew-. ..' is and Clark fair a big coast event, many letters of approvnl have been received from merchants all over tne state, wno seem to realise that a, concentrated ef fort on behalf of Portland's big under taking Will certainly result to the ad vantage of all. Pacific coast states, Whether "the Merchants' association f San Francisco will' accept the de rision of the staf board of trade Is not definitely known, but It Is safe to pre dict that' they will. Mr. Pobrmann, ruling spirit -In- the association, is one who. is willing to have the city as well as the slate stand shoulder to shoulder with our northern neighbor and ' when the-association meets, it will probably follow in the footsteps of the state body and the chamber of commerce ami offer to tend Oregon and Portland all the assistance in , the power of the largest mercantile organisation . in San Francisco. v;.,'.-; "y'': v?', Japanese . Kejoiee. . " A deal has been said about the depar ture of Japanese from San Francisco to Join the army of the Emperor of Japan in the present struggle with Russia.' The truth in the matter Is that the Japanese of tbe local colony have not shown any disposition to return home, Although scores of them would were they able to do so. The Japanese have been In demand as : laborers In Cali fornia, and have beejj. ' getting good wages. Especially In the raisin belt have they been steadily and remun eratively employed and they .re loth to eave a good thing for an uncertain place in the home army. However, the little brown men have shown a loyal spirit and have watched with Intense Interest - the bulletin boards of the newspapers for tidings from their vic torious fleets. One of the ludicrous situations has been that of the Japan ese celebrating ; in typical - American style the victory at Port Arthur. There lias been a goodly amount of real red liquor Imbibed and the sight of a band of Japanese - walking along a public street, arm In arm, shouting the glor ies of the' Japanese nation has not been Infrequent. t Jim Crawford Makes a Hit. A local newspaper man has made a hit with a clever burlesque called "The Beauty Shop" that has had a sx weeks' run at Fisher's theatre. The writer is Jamea; Crawford of the Call, formerly chief copy-reader of the Examiner. Mr. Crawford some weeks ago was ap proached by the Fisher management with fha ftrnnnitttlnn ' in wrlt them ' something that' could be used as a specialty to follow "I. O. U." that was drawing to a close after a successful run. . . "All right." said Crawford. "! will try my luck.'' Big houses and enthusiastic aud iences resulted and now Mr. Crawford Is negotiating with Weber and Field that they may take the play east when that aggregation of clever stagers leave here a week from Monday next. The "Beauty Shop" introduce a number of spirited songs and some very attractive stage effects.. The parts set aside for the well-known comedians . Kolb and Dill are full of genuine humor and with a Weberfleldlan setting, will undoubt edly make a big hit in New York. j Ward Oot Angry. " Considerable surprise, by- the way, has been occasioned in theatrical circles by .the appearance of the Weberfleld lans here. That so expensive and ex clusive a company should travel across the continent to San Francisco for a two weeks' engagement is something that local managers could not under stand.- But the sequel to the punle Is that the Weber, and. Field theatre in New York waa placed temporarily under the ban of the Are commission and during the time required for re pairs, the management determined to fetch the stars of the first theatrical magnitude to the Bay City as an ex perlment. No one can tell, of course. Just how much the venture netted the reckless managers, but there must be a good balance to their credit. Judging from the large audiences that have gathered at the Grand opera house. The . immense structure has been filled every night to the uppermost row of the gal lery, while at the Columbia Warde and James In one of the most striking tragedies extant, "Alexander the Great." rant over cold boards before a scatter Jng though appreciative audience. - Warde lost his temper a bit and said some real mean things about the fun producers at. tbeMilon street Play nouse. lie addressed his little gather ing in thundering tones and told them of the lack of patronage on account of the tendency of the world to look upon the light side of nature. His remarks were well received, but the newspaper orltics seem to say with Ella Wheeler Wilcox, "Laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone." Another piece of news the Grand rtnara hnitu tei ttM awmaiI Kw Mood exclusively, Che Mackay estate Having sold out their interest Xaekays Leaving 7 rise. Apropos of the Mackay estates, the report that the Mackays have - about made up their minds to spend most of tneir time between Europe and New York atmears to be rnnnrtnit hv h cuing out or most or the Mackay In terests in this city. A few weeks ago the estate disposed of a fine piece of property at tne corner of Fourth and Market, which It must be said has never been improved by thm to any great extent, to a syndicate of buyers. The lot has a large frontage on Market . street ana will be cleared of the old buildings as soon as the leases expire. This will not be for a year. The pres ent Intention of the syndicate is to erect a fine 15-story building on the property and it Is said In some quarters that there Is an understanding with the Mackays that part of the premises shall lie leased to the Commercial Cable com pany and the Postal Telegraph" com- , pa n y for headq ua iters. ... , The troops at the Presidio have been drilling: In all the maneuvers of th. school of the rtglmamV the batallion and the brlgado of late at a most'aston Uhlng rate.
