Col. B. F. Shaw, one of the earliest pioneers, gave a general address on the ' conditions existing- in this . country i through those early and troublous times. He. waa a lieutenant-colonel in the .Yakima war of 1855-66 and served as a private during the Cay use war of 1814. It waa during the progress of the trouble with the Yaklmaa that Col- onel Shaw with a command of, 200 men attacked and routed 600 of the Indiana ' at Grand. Railway Summer excursions, . from Portland into . surrounding places of v beauty and interest are., to be discontinued by agreent made by - passenger officials of local lines. This 1s the statement made today by an official of the Astoria Columbia River railway.' As that line did most of the excursion, business and through the entire season carried thousands of people to Seaside at a 11 rate, this road's statement .concerning any proposed action against excursions Is important td summer tourists. The ing that final and' definite action in this line had not been authorized by the other lines, but had been under advise ment for two months or more. s The Astoria official said that his road steadily ! lost money on Its summer travel because of the low rate made to Seaside, and that generally railroad men hold excursions a nuisance.
