About two years ago the land was sola toy the present owners- to the Ore gon Pacific Colonisation company.' of Minneapolis, Minn., lor 1110,000. About fiB.ooo. was paid down and a mortxaa-e executed for the balance. The Eastern company Intended - to sell th,e land to small farmers but they lacked ths funds to carry out their project and the mort gage waa foreclosed. The . war department today notified the department adjutant general that ths sum needed for a new roof for the post quartermaster's stables had been granted. This oil will be Imported direct from Singapore, -The product of the mill is called "nut lard." and is made of cure cocoanut oil. This preparation Is to take the place of lard In cooking. A chemical analysis of nut lard Is said to have resulted as follows: Oleln. 41 -per cent; concrete. 61 per cent; moisture, I per cent This analysis shows ths oil Isrd to be free from all fatty acids. During the past few days Mr. Yerex haa received orders for ths lard from manufacturing chemists, candy and cracker makers and wholesale grocers In Minneapolis, Pittsburg. New Tork, Buffalo, Chicago, Battle Creek, Omaha, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Marlon. Ind., White River Junction,. Vt, and Sidney, New South wales, Ths oil will be shipped to Portland In large hogsheads that Is, until the copra plant is erected here - "Copra", is an East Indian word for the dried cocoanut from which vis extracted the oil that, is used for. the manufacturing-of the-nut lard.- This plant 'will be much larger than, the lard factory and will, employ several hundred men from the start (Journal Soeclal Service.) General Miles arrived in this'city yesterday after a leisurely trip through Texas, New Mex ico and Arizona. Wade has been unner sentence of death for more than a-year and hs entertained hopes to the laai max ns might escape tha chair. These hopes wers finally dashed to pieces last week when the circuit court n. fused to grant a stay of execution. The waae Pro there were convicted of the murder or Kate Sullivan, who lived in a lonely house hear Toledo. She and her sister, Johanna Sullivan, were alone in tne nouse on the evening of AprU 14, 1900, when masked men entered for the purpose of robbery. Before thev left however, Kate Sullivan was clubbed to aeatn ana her sister Badly injured. Not long after a man named Landon was sent to the penitentiary for some offense ana upon nis release he became talka tive and gave Information which led to the belief that he and the Wade broth ers were guilty of the Sullivan murder. All were arrested and all were found guilty of murder in the first degree, but with Landon's verdict there was a rec ommendation for mercy, and he was sent to prison ror lire. He was the main witness In the prosecution of the broth ers. The date for Albert Wade's exe cution was set ror last June, but a mo tion for a new trial acted as a stay of execution. . . -. . . . whist a short musical program follow ing.
