Will th Southern PaelflO build from Jforth Yamhill to TIllamooKT . L C. B. Sampson, who arrived In thi eltr yMtcnlair art .Aavinp; man tnnr nf Western Oregon, nil the peo pla of tha TIllamooK country beltava tha road will b constructed within a abort tlm and rumor la .current there at preaent that 'with the opening of print- a party of aurVeyora will begin running- line and placing fraae "Tha.' route aa ' rlanried." aald Mr, lunniiin. "la tin the Yamhill River to the oivld and through the mountain by mean of a tunnel to U Traaa River, down which the line will run to Tillamook". The grade will be com. Varatlvely light In thli way and tha dlatance to be traveled would be com nnratlvelv ahnrt Tha axoeniie Of OOD truction would be heavy but would not amount to a great deal when the enormous value of the product of the oertlon that would thu b opened are taken Into consideration. ' Tinmok Want BoadV The Tillamook people want a rail road and would be willing to do almoat anything In human power to secure one. The vest resource of the coun try are badly crippled and advance ment Is retarded because of lack of transportation farllltlps. It Is true there Is a steamer line there, but thi Is vastly Inadequate to' meet the de mands of a growing country like that. There should be dully connection with the metropolis of the state and peoplo diwlrous of going In titer and looking over the situation and becoming aiiinlntnl with conditions ought not to be compelled to travel from 30 to sv miles by stage or on horseback. By n doling they are disgusted with the outlook before they really come Into toiicU with the fertile section along the const." The present homeseeker movement is having but little effect on the Tllla mook district. Mr. Sampson says, be cause Immigrants are not able to get Into that psrt of the state without much trouble. Portland would derive frreut benefit from the throwing open of that vicinity to settlement and he hones the day will soon come when the true worth of that great coast rpuntry will be real I led and it trade competed for. Koad Would Pay Well. "Of course." Mr. Sampson said. "I know nothing; regarding the plans of the Southern Faclflo and am not pre' pared to go on record aa predicting that tha railroad and the tunnel Into the Tillamook country will be built, but 1 am certain that It would be a paying proposition and that the com pany that nnaiiy does put tnrougn a road Into that district will open up a g4d mine. - The people are eager for transportation facilities and could do a grwat deal better were they proviaea. "I do not know where the story of the southern survey and the tunnel route originated, but It certainly has gained wide circulation along the cjiast settlements and la very generally believed. JUnny a Tillamook farmer I plannihg what wonders he will do wnen the road Is built connecting his place with Portland." Mr. Sampson also said there was a revival of the rumor that a line would lie built down the coast from Seaside by way of Nehalem. SHIPYARD "BUSY Three Large River Steamers Are Awaiting Repairs. 0upple's shipyard, at the foot of Bel mont street, is busy making repairs to a number of river steamers. The former government steamer Cascades is receiv ing extensive alterations to her hull and machinery, and the Hogue baa been pull ad on the way In order to make repairs to her hull. The steamer Albany Is awaiting her turn to go on the ways, and will receive a general overhauling. ' W'i. !. J U ..LJ-.I! East . side patrolmen complain that there are -no police facHltlea on their side of the river. They claim that when ever they make an arrest they are forced tot go to some private telephone and pay thelf own money to call up th patrol wagon. Most of the officer are com pelled to report every hour when on duty, and by the tlm salary day comes around they are many nickels short on account of having to pay the telephone tolls. On of the officers, in talking of the matter, said: 'It 1 shame that the East Side de partment has no call boxes In which to make their reports and to Call up the wagon. What we need Is a few police booths, such a ar located on the West Side. In Central East Portland there should be three of these stations, one at the corner of Grand avenue and East Bumslde, another at the corner of Orand avenue and East Morrison and another at Powell and Mllwaukle. The locating of the boxes would save us quite a bit of time and aometlmes the loss of a prisoner." ARE NOT SATISFIED Inrington People Want Better Street Car Facilities. The resident of Irvlngton want bet ter street car facilities than they have at present. The company has been be sieged a number of time by people who claim . that the waits between cars are too long. The City & Suburban Com pany now operates the line on a 16-mln-ute schedule, and claims that if more cars are put on they will be run at a loss. ' The Portland Railway Company will soon begin the construction work on its Irvlngton line, and an effort will be mad to make everything ready for the oper ation of the road before the winter month again set In. It Is quite likely that a 10-minute running schedule will be put Into effect with the completion of the branch. The new line will nearly parallel the City & Suburban road.
