Railway Matters. I'rom the Oreonian. Mr. Henry Thielscn was in the city yesterday making nrrnngoniGiits for placing in the field two more surveying parties One of these parties is to make a preliminary purvey from the mouth of the Snake river to Portland, on the Oregon side. The other party will make a general examination of the Palousc country. The object of these surveys U t) obtain dati for judgment as to the best means to be adopted for development of a proposed railway sys tem. The Boise Statesman of the Oth thus speaks of movements in that quar ter: Messrs. Haily, Logan nnd Pink hnm. who went with Mr. Thielsen, the chief engineer of the Oregon Pacific railroad, on his recent trip to Eagle Rock from this place, returned home hv sta??ii on Tuesday last. From what j 1 ; we can learn from these gentlemen, Mr. Thielscn was favorably impressed with the route traversed and examined by this party, and no doubt exists that the road will be built froin some point on the present finished road, and that it will pass through Big Camas prairie in the direction of this city. Mr. Thielsen regards the route examined as every way practicable for a railroad, and on the most direct line. The Utnli Morthern is already advanced beyond Eagle 11 ek, on its way in the direc tion of Montana, but will probably uiakc a terminus at least for an indef inate time at Market Lake, where it will command for the present the Mon tana and Yankee Fork trade. The main line which Jay Gould says he intends to push as rapidly as possible will be through Southern Idaho and Eastern Oregon to the Columbia river. Mr. Thielsen went on from Eagle Pock to Ogden where he expected to meet Jay Gould and others connected with the enterprise, from which place he will return here, where he may be expected to arrive in a few days. Mr. Campbell, the assistant engineer, is with Gen. Carteeof this place, engaged in surveying the route down the South Boise from Little Camas prairie. All the movements and expressions thus far indicate the almost certainty that the road will be built through the Camas prairies and down the Boise river to this place. Through private sources we learn that Mr. Thielsen is now on the way back from Kelton, and will make examination of the country be tween Snake river aud Baker City, and after that will make a survay with a view th deciding on the best route for reaching Walla Walla or Umatilla. Death ok Mrs. Major Stewart. A dfcpntch to the Oreomnu from As toria says: Mrs. Stewart, wife of Maj. Stewart, of the 4tli artillery, U. S. A., stationed at Fort Canby, W. T., died unexpectedly to-day at the Occident Hotel in this city. Mrs. S. was a pas senger from Sm Francisco on the S. S. Oregon's last trip and gave birth to a child during the voage. The little girl baby is living and doing well. Grand Officers Elected. The Royal Arch Chapter A. F. and A. Some people are always complaining about what is written about them in a newspaper, and threaten dreadful things against the writer thereof. Per haps the following will be a warning to them: A man coming out of a Texan newspaper offico with one eye gored out, his no.so spread all over his face, and ooe of his ears chewed oiF, to a policeman who interviewed him, re plied: "I did not like an article tnat 'peared in the paper last week, and I went in to see the man that writ it, aod he war there." ''Mamma, it looks negligent to see your ehiidred in the spring of the year with their faces all broken out in filthy sores. Tell husband to bring home a bottle of Pfundcr,s Oregon Blood puri fier and give the little pets a dose ev ery morning, and you will find their happy, healthy, blooming cheeks the envy of all the neighborhood." Talking of a railroad the Boise Statesman says: Three passes ars spo ken of: First, up Burnt river on the line of the staue road; second, from Snake river, near tho mouth of Boise river, to Hinehuit's crossing of the Malheur, by way of Malheur City, Eldorado and thence to Baker City; third, o down Snake river to the mouth of Powder river, and then up Powder river until you strike the pla. teau on the right) and thencc.to Grand Rondo by way of Pyle's canvon. This latter route would leave Baker City some 80 miles distant, but it is not considered the most practicable. Hayes, last week, kissed 4G young j ladies of a Maryland boarding school, who had called on him. Can't he be satisfied with getting the Presidency away fiom Mr. Tilden, and not rob Tom Thumb of his laurels? Standard. JWAllil, CANYON CITY, OREGON. Dealer in 3lt22a.os3 c2 SaclcHeG.
