Herman Wise, ex-mayor of As tora, retired from the official field in possession of distinct honors and practically no "come-backs to annoy him. He has won the favor of the tommunity over which he presided for three yeats; and to the pronounc ed satisfaction of the"people without respect to party affiliation, because what he has done was for the whole people, whom he was large enough to (consider at all times. It takes a man to compass this sort of thing. He has had much to contend with, Including a council that was not any too amenable to decent leadership, a to its majority and he had to fight for most of the triumphs he won;but he had the decent people of the city him at all times as well as the press and that sort of backing usually wins out One of the attributes that made Mr. Wise successful as an executive, was his ability to realize and recog nize a plain hint when it was given him; he did not assume to be the "whole tiling," though as far as his associates on the council went, as to the majority, of course, he came mighty near being it There is not a man in the city but who will wish him the best measure of success, and peace, and gratifica tion in his quieter field of endeavor; tad he has what few men possess, a right to believe that the day may come when the people may call him back to their service, iti default of other dependable choice. He was a i an exceneat'mayor just as he is an excellent citizen. THE CURTIS ORDINANCE. Councilman C. J. Curtis is to the fore with a plain, busines-like, sensi ble ordinance for the governing of the expenses of this city and making them amenable to the will and scru tiny of the committeemen as well as the chairman of the several commit tees. The arbitrary rule that ha3 flourished in this city since time immemorial, permitting the mere dictum of a chairman to prevail in the final disposition of every account and claim, big and little, that arose against the city, has cost this com munity a vast deal of money that was needless, and any law that will cir cumscribe the folly and minimize the waste should pass instanter. The new council is going to be sharply gauged by its action on just such bills as this; and we hope for the credit of the city and council, that no antagonism will be shown thi measure. Else we shall be forced to conclude that the post of councilman, in some instances here, is no sort of an honor, but rather a means to an end that is discreditable, if not .worse. And we shall be just as plain when the time comes for en dorsing, encouraging, and standing behind every clever and wise thing the council shall da Mr. Curtis' measure is one that no honest man may gainsay, so far as we can fathom it, and it will be help ful and expedient, to all concerned, if it is promptly passed and rigorously adhered to in the transaction of the public business. . SUPER-SENSITIVE SOULS. There are, in Astoria, as in other lively communities, men who are SU' per-sensitive about newspaper com ment They are always glad of the friendly paragraph or story in which they figure, however much they may, by way of mock-modesty, deprecate the public mention; they are rarely averse to the pleasant note and comment in which they or theirs are paraded in kindly fashion, and there have been instances of real gratitude, felt and expressed, for the saving grace of the public-prints when some of the eraver episodes of life have confronted them. But, once hale a man within the range of newspaper criticism, direct, or implied, and he grows venemous with hate and inco herent with rage at the liberty taken with his name or relation to the mat' ter under review. It is one of the farces of life, and the newspaperman has a grim appre ciation of it that veges near the mark bf contempt when he scans his gen eral treatment of men and finds them so helplessly and hopelessly childish For be it known, that in all the rela tions a paper assumes with its read ing patronage, the personal equation is the one most religiously observed at all times; mistakes will often oc cur; but in the main they are caught on the long line of careful scrutiny that pervades a newspaper office and before they are uttered in cold black and white. There is justification of some kind behind every personal mention and allusion in a responsible newspaper. This must be remember ed at all times, in justice to the pub lic, the person, and the paper. There is one way of suppressing the super-sensitive soul who cann.it stand the counter-point of jour nalistic animadversion, and that is to bar all mention of him under any and all circumstances; this is a cruelty .seldom resorted to, but always avail able; and often as editors and report ers are tempted to use it, they, as often, refuse to probe, or flatter, the vanity, that has brought the individ ual under such contemplation. The paper is a creation of a day, and in its absorbing processes and high du ties, it rarely stoops to the pitiful al ternative, choosing the pleasanter task of forgetting. i No doubt remains as to the best sellers in the book world. Pierpont Morgan has just paid $120,000 for IS volumes at an auction sale. Mr. Bryan say's the- democratic party is very much alive. Has he been applying the looking-glass test to see if it still breathes? "In this country," says an ex change, "every industry is an infant one until it is dead." Well, the coun try is an infant, though a lusty one. It has never been good American doctrine that the laws of the country sohuld undertake to discriminate be tween different classes of citizens. Contracts have been signed, sealed, and delivered, whereby the management of the Astoria thea tre may definitely announce "The Great Divide" on tomorrow night. The attraction is uuder the personal direction of Henry Miller, the dis tinguished actor-manager, who lus been presenting William Vaughn Moody's phenomenally successful drama of American life for over 500 nights at the Princess and Daly's Theatres, New York, to such unpre cedented business that a road tour was out of the question heretofore. A superb company are now touring, and the entire production, with com plete scenic equipment, will be given here precisely as presented for two seasons in the metropolis. "BABES IN TOYLAND." "Babes in Toyland," the gorgeous musical offering that is to come to the Astoria Theatre on Saturday, January 9, is conceded to be the best mounted production on the road. While the production itself is a marvel of art, there is much else that will interest GERTRUDE LAURENCE IN "BABES IN TOYLAND." . and entertain. The eye is as sensitive to entertainment as the ear, and when the eye is pleased, half of any battle is won. A selected chorus of 30 charming girls make no less than 12 changes of costume from start to finish of the offering. They appear as citizens, then fairies, then dolls, then soldiers, then butterflies, then widows, and so on through the entire offering. In a season's travel it has covered the South and Texas to El Paso, the Pacific Coast, the Northwest as far as Vancouver, B. C, to Winnipeg, Mani toba; the Middle States to Canada; the Maritime Provinces, including Halifax and St. John, to Cape Bretorif finally ending with a complete tour of New England, and to financial re ceipts that have become the talk of the theatrical world. Portland's high class stock company, the Baker, per manently located at " the beautiful Bungalow Theatre in that city will visit Astoria for one performance, the occasion being made possible by Geo. L. Baker donating his popular Port land playhouse for a society enter tainment given for the benefit of the earthquake sufferers next Monday. The bill the company will present here will be it's great holiday week success "Are You a Mason?" which made one of the biggest hits Portland theatrical circles have known this season. It is founded upon the affairs of two well known men who are pre tending they are Masons and is filled with laugh convulsing situations and characters. A general ad vance in the price of brooms and the product of broom corn, will be mad, owing to the shoitage of the crot, according to some members of the association of broom manufacturers, which has concluded its sessions here. William A. Gardner of Amsterdam, N.Y., who presided, said the whole sale price of brooms had increased 50 cents a doen during 1908. "Farmers have found that raising broom corn is not as profitable as rai sing indian corn," he said.
