While In Denver, Augustus Thomas, the play wriKlit, unexpectedly met the father of the woman who was the In spiration for hit Bonita in "Arizona." He hurin"t forgotten how be came to write the pretty play dealing with frontier life, and when General Chan, Cooper, U. S. A., called he waa ready to Indulge in reminiscences of old Fort Grant at if it had all happened but yesterday.''-. ... It seems that the plot for "Ari aona" was suggested by a little scan' dal which was disturbing Fort Crant when Auguatus Thomas went there for a vacation some years ago. The playwright stopped . at the Hooker ranch, one of the show places of Ari aona which was not far from the Fort. ' The ranch was owned by Henry Canby Hooker, a Lot Angeles mil lionaire) whose stock was so numer ous that no one ever tried to reckon its etcnt The Hookers were wont to stay at the ranch in relays, and it happened that Forrestiue Cooprr Hooker, : the daughter of General Cooper, and the daughter in law of Henry Canby Hooker, waa there at the time Thomas made his vi; !e was attracted by her pmo&l!', and celebrated her as Bonita, (he delight ful little frontier girl of 'Arizona." Colonel Hooker is ,he original Henry Canby, except that the Colonel was a nun of ptlih nd culture, a real exquisite :n fact, while the stage char actcr is a nXigh w.i ready frontiers man, with a good heart and a keen wit Mr. Thomas told General Cooper that he had preserved many snatches of Colonel Hooper's conversation for use in his play. Frederick Remington was called to Arizona to illustrate the sketch when Thomas had finished it. The Hooker ranch was called the "Sierra Bonita", and ia even now visit ed by tourists, who are amazed at such lavish elegance far from human habitation. Many distinguished men are encircled on its guest sheets. General Cooper, the father of For- restlnc Hooker, took command cf Fort Crant after the visit of Thomas, and, although he had heard the story of the pjay, he was anxious to verify it by Thomas himself, and called for that purpose.
