L Reed of Cincinnati, O., chairman of the As sociation's committee on national medical legislation. In speaking on the campaign for national health laws, Dr. Reed said: ; "On the heels of the -various steps forward I am gratified to be able to assure you that the President has au thorized the statement that he will formulate definite proposals and transmit them with his endorsement to the next congress. It now devolves upon 130,000 doctors In the United States, not only to back the Presi dent, in his work, but to anticipate those actions by a persistent cam paign Jit behalf of this fundamental feature of the public welfare." Speaking of the pollution of streams,' Dr. Reed referred to the Ohio watershed as a "thousand miles of river and a thousand miles of ty phoid." Over 60,000 persons die ev ery year of cancer, he said, and the death rate from that cause is increas ing by leaps and bounds. . If only one half of the persons who die or are incapacitated as the result of tuberculosis and typhoid were saved, Dr. Reed declared H would mean a saving " in money , to maintain a "National Board of Health, pay for the army and navy, fortify our coast, duplicate our ar mament on our seas, deepen our in ternal waterways and in ten years -vould pay for the Panama canal, and wipe out our national debt." MOTOR GUNBOATS, That the gasoline propelled vessel is excellently1 adapted for river and harbor service, both from the eco nomy and efficiency of the machinery system, has been conclusively dem onstrated, siuce 1t possess many ad vantages ovef' steam.' An important development has," however,' recently been made by .the Austro-Hungariaii govrnment acquiring two such ves sels for special naval duty upon the River Danube, The vessels measure shop-lty feet " length by nine feet wide and draw two feet eight inches of waterThere are five sets of gasolffie motors, each of seventy brake horse power, driving three screwsTheir offensive armament comprises a light gun mounted upon a revolving tower ,at the stern while there is a crow's ,nest fitted to the masV whence i ele vated rifle fire can be tnaintaincl. The vulnerable parts of the boats are "pro tected by chrome steel armor plates offering complete resistance to point blank short rang rifle fire. Forward is a small coming tower, In the official tests these vessels proved very speedy, a mean speed of 22 1-2 knots per hour being' maiif taincd during a run of sixty minutes with a load of three tons .
