Steam Heat From Now On The proprietors of the Page build ing, on Commercial street, a'he cor ner of Twelfth, yesterday tested out their new steam-heating plant and it worked to the complete satisfaction of the owners and of the contractor who installed it. From now on that fine office and rooming house will be cozily heated throughout by the turning of a valve-wheel. Just Routine Trip Assistant General Freight and Pas senger Agent R. The preceding day there were 128 registered, which brings the entire, number up to 409. The vote by precincts yesterday was as fol lows: Precinct one, 22; precinct two, IS; precinct three, 25; precinct four, 74; precinct five, 72; precinct six, 44; precinct seven, 29. Half Day Session At a meeting of the school board yesterday afternoon the question of the crowded condition of the primary rooms in several of the school build ings was considered. It was decided tn hnlil half dav cessions in the Adair md McCIure primary depart ments, as the only solution ot tne trouble in those two buildings. By this plan a part of the little folks will go' to school in the morning and the remained in. the afternoon. A & C. Assessment' J. McGulrf of the A. & C. Railway came down from Portland yesterday to see about the assessment placed against the rompanys' rolling : stock in Clatsop county. , The company avers that the three counties through which its mileage runs have assesied the rolling stock at a far greater valua tion than it is actually worth. ! The chief complaint is against Columbia county, and the company desires the boards of equalization Of the three counties to get together and agree on a total valuation of the rolling stock and then to apportion the as sessments to each county according to the mileage therein. Very Good Shows The Taliman, the real shown at the cozy little Grand Theatre the first part of the week was fine and the "Regard For Bravery" shown at the pleasant Jewel Theatre is also an excellent film. The song, "But You, My Queen " snug t by the popular singer, Mr, Hague, is splendid and both these theatres deserve good patronage. Afternoon, Not Evening Manager James T. Wallace, of the Clatsop County, Democratic head quarters and Bryan campaign receiv ed a telegram yesterday from State Chairman Sweck at Portland, advis ing him that the National Democra tic Committee had ordered Capt. Richard Pearson Hobson to Califor nia at once, and to cancel all his Oregon dates in this behalf. Hap pily, it was made possible for Cap tain Hobson to fulfil his Astoria en gagement, though the hour is neces sarily shifted from the evening, to 2:30 o'clock this afternoon, at Lo gan's Hall. He will be accompanied by Governor Saunders, of Louisiana; and they wilt have a big reception at the hands of their constituents. RegiatnttJon . ' ' Registration books in the office of the city auditor will be open from now until November 5, inclusive of that day, and. then will close until after the primary. ; On November 14 the books will be opened again anj will remain open until December 4, and inclusive of that day. Better "paste this in your hat." Judge Anr derson and Mr. Nordstrom, who is assisting him, were again kept busy all day yesterday registering the many who presented themselves. There promises to be a pretty big registration for both primary and election. Of course the registration if made now is good for both pri mary and election. At the office of the county clerk last evening the details of the registration there, had not been figured out, There had been many changes. Enforce Truancy Laws Miss Warren, the county superin tendent of schools, stated yesterday that active efforts will be made to enforce , the state truancy laws throughout the county districts, though comparatively little trouble is anticipated in this direction. The sheriff and county judge ire ex-ofiicio the county truancy officers, and heretofore they have lent their active aid in compelling attendance on the part of refractory children. This year, Miss Warren reports, the at tendance seems to be in good shape as far as has been ascertained. At Hammond, for example, there are only three children unaccounted for, and at Seaside the matter is being looked into. There are. four chil dren at Olney whose attendance has been quite irregular, and this irregu larity will be looked into. When a pupil is out of school more than four days a month his or her attendance is looked upon as being irregulaY. Grand Rehearsal 'About 40 ladies and gentlemen as sembled last evening in Logan's hull, members of the , Astoria Philhar monic Society, for a full and com plete rehearsal of Dr. Emil Enna's beautiful opera "The Mountain King," which will be the "piece dc resistance" at the grand Philharmon ic concert to be given during the coming month. Dr. Enna was in charge of the work last even ing and he is delightfully sanguine of the clear-cut success that awaits the second public appearance of the So ciety he has done so much to organ ize and perfect in its work. I he work done last night was exceeding ly acceptable and was counted as a sheer and sure manifestation of what was to be expected from the singers and players at the coming concert. The fine chimes that figure so con spicuously in the new opera, were in evidence last evening and heif service was' among the most beauti ful incidents of the rendition of the hour. For Exhibition Drill At the regular meeting of the First Company in Foard & Stokes hall last evening a competitive drill was held for the purpose of selecting two squads of the best men in the drills. The cbject is to give a public exhibi tion on the night of November 11, at the time when the ladies of the Relief Corps have planned to pre sent the First Company with a silk flag. Eighteen men were selected out of the company for this exhibi tion drill. Then the remainder of the organization was divided into two parts, and one part will give an exhibition bayonet drill, while the other part will give an exhibition of the setting-up exercises.. The whole exhibition should prove very enter taining and the boys will undoubted ly make a fine showing. There will be no target practice next Sunday, as the tides are not right. Orders were issued for all the members to wear their blue or dress uniforms at the next regular meeting night. Progressing Finely. H. E. Steffensen, the Republican applicant for nomination honors to the post of Street Superintendent, reports that his petition is doing finely and he is making a thorough canvass. Mr. Steffensen is 'an expert piledriver and used to all devices and j tools in street building and a man well qualified for the office. He is making an intelligent campaign for recognition, and getting it. ' : Here October 23-24.
