quality the like of which is not to be
found around here.

At a meeting of the school board
yesterday afternoon the question of
the crowded condition of the primary
rooms in several of the school build
ings was considered. It was decided
tn hnlil half dav cessions in the
Adair md McCIure primary depart
ments, as the only solution ot tne
trouble in those two buildings. By
this plan a part of the little folks
will go' to school in the morning and
the remained in. the afternoon.
A & C. Assessment'
J. McGulrf of the A. & C. Railway
came down from Portland yesterday
to see about the assessment placed
against the rompanys' rolling : stock
in Clatsop county. , The company avers
that the three counties through which
its mileage runs have assesied the
rolling stock at a far greater valua
tion than it is actually worth. ! The
chief complaint is against Columbia
county, and the company desires the
boards of equalization Of the three
counties to get together and agree
on a total valuation of the rolling
stock and then to apportion the as
sessments to each county according
to the mileage therein.

Very Good Shows
The Taliman, the real shown at
the cozy little Grand Theatre the
first part of the week was fine and
the "Regard For Bravery" shown at
the pleasant Jewel Theatre is also an
excellent film. The song, "But You,
My Queen " snug t by the popular
singer, Mr, Hague, is splendid and
both these theatres deserve good
patronage.
Afternoon, Not Evening
Manager James T. Wallace, of the
Clatsop County, Democratic head

2:30 o'clock this afternoon, at Lo
gan's Hall. He will be accompanied
by Governor Saunders, of Louisiana;

RegiatnttJon . '
' Registration books in the office of
the city auditor will be open from
now until November 5, inclusive of
that day, and. then will close until
after the primary. ; On November 14
the books will be opened again anj
will remain open until December 4,
and inclusive of that day. Better
"paste this in your hat." Judge Anr
derson and Mr. Nordstrom, who is
assisting him, were again kept busy
all day yesterday registering the
many who presented themselves.
There promises to be a pretty big
registration for both primary and
election. Of course the registration
if made now is good for both pri
mary and election. At the office of
the county clerk last evening the
details of the registration there, had
not been figured out, There had
been many changes.
Enforce Truancy Laws
Miss Warren, the county superin
tendent of schools, stated yesterday
that active efforts will be made to
enforce , the state truancy laws
throughout the county districts,
though comparatively little trouble is
anticipated in this direction. The
sheriff and county judge ire ex-ofiicio
the county truancy officers, and
heretofore they have lent their active
aid in compelling attendance on the
part of refractory children. This
year, Miss Warren reports, the at
tendance seems to be in good shape
as far as has been ascertained. At
Hammond, for example, there are
only three children unaccounted for,
and at Seaside the matter is being
looked into. There are. four chil
dren at Olney whose attendance has
been quite irregular, and this irregu
larity will be looked into. When a
pupil is out of school more than four
days a month his or her attendance
is looked upon as being irregulaY.

For Exhibition Drill
At the regular meeting of the First
Company in Foard & Stokes hall last
evening a competitive drill was held
for the purpose of selecting two
squads of the best men in the drills.
The cbject is to give a public exhibi
tion on the night of November 11,
at the time when the ladies of the
Relief Corps have planned to pre
sent the First Company with a silk
flag. Eighteen men were selected
out of the company for this exhibi
tion drill. Then the remainder of
the organization was divided into
two parts, and one part will give an
exhibition bayonet drill, while the
other part will give an exhibition of
the setting-up exercises.. The whole
exhibition should prove very enter
taining and the boys will undoubted
ly make a fine showing. There will
be no target practice next Sunday, as
the tides are not right. Orders were
issued for all the members to wear
their blue or dress uniforms at the
next regular meeting night.
Progressing Finely.
H. E. Steffensen, the Republican
applicant for nomination honors to
the post of Street Superintendent,
reports that his petition is doing
finely and he is making a thorough
canvass. Mr. Steffensen is 'an expert
piledriver and used to all devices and j
tools in street building and a man
well qualified for the office. He is
making an intelligent campaign for
recognition, and getting it. ' :
