The work done by the engineer in charge, Capt. F, G. Evans, ha been very latisfactory, and all cem ready to assist him in continuing in the work necessary to put the road in condi tion to finance. Mr. Evans was appointed to go to Tillamook to ask tliepcop)e of that city to take up the lower end of the survey. Mr. W. E. Buffum was ap pointed to assist in the work with Mr, Evans, If the Tillamook people' are as much interested as the people of our city their work will be short and easy. In conversation today Mr. Evans said "1 wish to thank the ato pic of Astoria and vicinity for the very strong support to the enterprise both financially and by their good wishes. In no place have I met a people who enter into enterprises with the whole fouled stvle that has been demonstrated in this instance." Mr. Evan promises when he and Mr. Buffum return from the sktr- city the will have completed the necessary preliminary financing to complete the survey and that work will be pushed to completion before the winter rains ct in. Southern Orcgnn country, which he enjoyed heartily. He report that Medford is rich in boosters and auto mobile, and one of the really beauti ful sections of Oregon; but that a man who wants to know the real fact, has to get away on the quiet and find the unprofessional citizen, who calmly tells one the truth, and that is good enough without any em bellishments. Dick did not invest down there, but says it is a country to invite investment alright . Modern Coal Bunkers Samuel Elmore & Company have just about completed the new electri cal coal hoist and bunkers on the Elmore pier at the foot of Third street, and the plant being thus mod trnied, will handle, in or out, 350 tons of coal a day, as against the old sys tem' 160 tons. Thj elevator stands at the edge of the pier and the hoist overhangs the channel, with elevated railways' running out on both side and a-loft, and dumps the coal from two-ton cars to any point onx the bunker dock below that .may fie de sired. The company has put about $3000 into this device and it will add notably to the dispatch of the busi ness for all concerned. PERSONAL MENTION William McBeth, the irrepressible news man, was u business visitor to Portland and the Oregon State" Fair at Salem, via the morning train out of here yesterday." Elijah Smith, the well known capi talist of Coos Bay, is again in the city. Mr. Smith declares Astoria has the premium climate of the coast at this season of the year. David West, one of the nominees for the office of auditor of Wahkia- ... . . .t sum county, wasiungton, was in the city yesterday on business and pleas ure; as was J. R. Burke, who captured- the nomination for Represen tative in the Legislature from lion. J. G. Megler; and Mr. Megler came over with him. J. G. Bailey, for treasurer, was here also, from Altoona. A matter of importance that will come, before the Chamber of Com merce at us meeting tomorrow night i the movement to secure a full com plement of men for Fort Stevens. At the present time there are only two companies of men at Fort Stevens while there should be five companies. In the two companies already located at Fort Stevens there are respectively 75 and 80 men. If the entire number of men that the fort would accommo dat were stationed there Fort Stevens should spend $30,000 i ore in Astoria than is now expended. , Captain Lamoreaux has been in formed that an extra company of men may be expected at Fort Stev ens from San Francisco within a very short time but there will still be an opportunity for two additional com panies. And these perhaps might be had by calling the attention of the War Department in Washington to the fact that Fort Stevens does not have as many men as the quarters will accommodate; It is of interest to know that Cap tain Lamoreaux has been successful in securing a gymnasium appropria tion and that a modernly .equipped gymnasium will be provided at Fort Stevens. He has not yet been given the authority to construct the gymna sium building but this may be expect ed within a reasonable time. Another thing that the Chamber of Commerce might take an interest in is Fort Canby, on the other side of the river from Fort Stevens. As a matter of fact much has been done in the way of improving Fort Canby and some modern guns have been mount ed there, but these are not provided with a electric power plant and until such a plant has been put in place Fort Canby is as useless with the guns as it was without them. The Chamber, of Commerce will hold its regular meeting at 8 o'clock tomorrow evening when, the special order of business will be" the consid eration of the Port of Astoria bill. The following letter was sent out yesterday to the members of the Chamber calling their attention to this special order of business and also to the fact that the underwriter for the electric railway proposition will be in Astoria on the 25th and suggest ing that something in the way of a smoker be provided for his entertain ment, to give an opportunity for some of the prominent citizens to set forth facts and figures with regard to the resources of-Astoria and Clatsop county: "We wish to call your attention to the fact that the Port of Astoria bill has been made a special order of busi ness for next Monday night, Septem ber 14th. at 8 p. m. All citizens are probably especially interested. "Another important feature to which I call your attention is that Mr. Evans, the pVomoter of the elec ric railway has arranged for the un derwriters' representative to visit Astoria . on September 25th. The Chamber of Commerce could profit ably arrange a smoker at which some; Now Is the Time for All Good Folks to Come and Trade With Meat to Fry Lamb Loiir Chops.......
