Spencer and the results of her invasion of the A. & C, O. R. &. N. and Kamm ter ritory. The idea is prevalent that a sharp fight is being programmed for the swift river liner, and that it will be precipitated by the coming of the steamer Baily Gatzert, which will enter the field with a schedule of pas senger rates hovering about the "two-bit" limit, while preserving the freight rates intact; the conclusion is final and general that such a contre temps will be disastrous for this city, as the sum of local buying will revert largely to Portland, as it did some years ago when such a tariff pre vailed between this city and that. The Spencer people are accused of hauling potatoes and feed-stuffs at a sharp reduction, while billing them at the nominal rate, and it is said, further, that a number of Astoria merchants are making use of the abatement This is to be resented by the transportation companies and in a fashion that will mean a whole lot Spe"e "I 1 6 . tradC f I MOSQUITOES AND HISTORY. DEPORTATION CHEAPER. The case of Frank Beckman, the insane person just committed from this county to the asylum for insane at Salem, is one to point the moral of Governmental interference. This man has been in the country for 20 years, coming hither from Sweden, his nature and system charged to the full with the germ of insanity. The man is a ravening maniac; a fierce type of the awful mental re-action that follows its hereditary plane, only to break forth on some extraordinary strain and pressure, and at best, cost ing the country enormously to care for and perpetuate an existance wholly unfit and menacing. This man never even applied for his first papers in citizenship; he is an alien charge upon the nurse of the native and naturalized citizenry of the state ! ,a(lller truck was nalf wy to the fire and country: Detore Adam had lus boots on. NEW YORK June 29.-For more than a month Stephen Joseph Adam, chief of the fire department of Buda Pest, Hungary, has been fighting fire on the East side as a member of Hook and Ladder Company 18. Adam, who weighs 230 pounds, came to this country accompanied by his wife and son and commissioned by the Buda Pest authorities to make a thorough investigation of the sys tem of fighting the flames in the big cities of the M. S. The credentials represented to Fire Chief Croker insured him every attention and his request to gain experience as a real fire laddie was granted. He was equipped with helmet uniform, rub ber coat and rubber boots and sent to Truck No. 18 to learn how the New York fire fighters do business. It took the Hungarian fire fichter several days to become accustomed to the quick action of the New York ers. Every business man here wants to see the tariffs at the lowest and saf est points, of course, and will do all that is reasonable to secure such con cessions; but whether it is "safe and sane" to precipitate a rate-war that will take the local dollar to the me tropols for its spending, is a matter of deep significance and should be weighed well and honestly before it passes into fact.
