AFTER BIRD BUTCHERS NEW YORK, June lS.-That whole regions of the Florida ever glades have within the last three years been robbed of every vestige of bird life to supply the world's mil linery market with the plumage of the heron that formerly bred there in countless numbers was reported here to-day. From several ornitho logists, who have just completed a survey of this section, reports have been sent to the headquarters of the National Association of Audubon Societies declaring that where Ameri ca was most rich in tropical races of birds it is totally barren to-day. At this rate of devastation, it is asserted, the plume hunters will leave this country entirely stripped of all its " out and sent to The Astorian LIST OF CANDIDATES FIRST DISTRICT Include! til the City of Astoria cast of Twenty second street to City Limits. . Detailed reports of the discovery of "wonderful rookeries of the small blue herons and of white birds with brilliant red legs and beaks probably ibis" in the regions where the Harney River enters the everglades were sent to the Audubon officials on March 27th, 1905. At the time an ex ploring party described the tropical birds in these unknown parts as "countless" and expressed apprehen sion that their discovery might lead to some inroads by the world's army of professional bird butchers. Since the first word of this find came to the ears of the millinery marauders, allj live feathered creatures have been exterminated throughout the entire region. ' ' To balk the world-wide activities of the nrofessional nhime hunters. whose forces have reached and de spoiled America's rarest resorts, Eng land is already taking firm steps. From end to end the British Empire lias been ravaged as Florida has by the market feather seekers. A bill ; similar to the "model law", which the j Audubon workers have succeeded In leading almost every state in this country to adopt, is to-day being pressed by Lord Averbury in ' the House of Lords for the prohibition of the importation of the plumage, skin or body of all wild birds except ostri ches, eider ducks and birds used as articles ' of diet. Acting upon the startling reports from Florida, the Audubon officials ) declared to-day that laws against the sale of the trophies of this butchery, irrespective of where they were taken, would be urged throughout this country, Al though the English bill is even more . . ... , 19,695 street 19,459 ...19,608 sweeping than the Audubon "model law" here, it is believed that with proper entorcement the latter may serve to stay the encroachment of the international commercial bird slaugh ter. Eventually it is the purpose of the association to perfect an interna tional organization to check this scouring of the globe for the adorn ment of the nations at the expense of their birds l'fe. "The primary reasons are strict ly economic. These birds, entirely aside from their wonderful delights as objects of beauty, form the basis of our nation's health as well as pros perity. What the street cleaning de partment is to this metropolis the sea birds are to the whole country. As their activities as scavengers are checked by unnatural destruction, pestilence and death will surely fol low. The birds stand at the founda tion of all cur natural resources and our very existence as well. To take up this hard fight against the monied interests that are killing our country's birds we need the individual support miral and financial of every man, woman and child in the country, It is reported that we have been endow ed with a million dollars; but this is untrue, as we depend solely upon the interest of less than a third of this sum, and the annual five dollar bills of our sustaining members.
